The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in the School of Education and Human Development seeks applicants for Research Specialist (wage) positions to collect data in kindergarten classrooms across the state of Virginia. The Research Specialist (Wage) collects data for the Assessment and Instruction in Mathematics (AIM) project. The goal of this project is to better understand how kindergarten teachers use math assessment data to help children learn. Incumbents will conduct classroom observations and administer assessments with students. Duties also include data entry, data uploading, and ensuring data integrity.

Work activities will be intermittent through May 2024. The training period generally requires up to 20-30 hours/week. Following training, hours are flexible based on your availability to work and can range anywhere from 8-20 hours a week.

Positions available in and around the following areas:

  • Tidewater (Norfolk, Virginia Beach)
  • Southwest Virginia (Roanoke, Wise)
  • Central Virginia (Richmond, Lynchburg)
  • Northern Virginia (Loudoun, King George, Fairfax)

HS diploma (or equivalent) AND one year of experience working with children in an educational setting or an out-of-school setting (such as a summer camp or an after-school program). A bachelor's degree in Social Science, Education, or related field is preferred. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; strong organization skills and attention to detail; and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population are essential. Ability to use and troubleshoot technology is required. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word), use of the internet, proficiency with laptops, tablets and/or PCs, and experience uploading/downloading information using cloud storage platforms is required. Individuals with Spanish proficiency are highly encouraged to apply!

Reliable transportation for traveling between schools is required. Mileage will be reimbursed.  Incumbents must also be able to attend training sessions in September and/or October.  Training sessions may include a combination of videoconference and in-person meetings.

Pay range: $18 - $22 per hour
