Position Focus:

Reporting to the Vice Chair for Research Affairs, the Research and Development MRI Hardware Engineer will be a part of a vibrant team of scientists and engineers in Yale’s world-renowned MR imaging center. The MR Center is a long-established interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research laboratory that provides state-of-the-art MR equipment, infrastructure, and expertise for the development and application of MRI and MRS methodology in biomedical research. Research is focused on the development of novel low cost MRI systems. Clinical applications targeted include spine, liver, cardiac, prostate and breast imaging.

We are looking for experienced MRI hardware engineers with expertise in magnet design, gradient design, construction, and manufacturing. This position will be responsible for leading the design and construction of spatial encoding gradients, interfacing gradients with low noise amplifiers, gradient measurement and correction schemes, and associated electronics, among other assigned tasks.

You will collaborate with a team of engineers on the construction of a novel low-cost MRI device in an environment where creative problem solving is encouraged. The work will be in-person, onsite, at the Yale MRRC, 300 Cedar Street, New Haven, CT.


Essential Duties

Principal Responsibilities: 1. Develops and evaluates performance and reliability of test equipment. Determines types and number of tests to be performed on equipment. Recommends modifications to testing equipment. Analyzes results. 2. Uses blueprints, sketches and schematics. 3. Instructs laboratory support staff in construction and modification techniques. Develops time and cost estimates, material requirements and methodology. Orders materials and supplies. 4. May set up and operate machinery, hand and power tools, and other equipment for the fabrication, testing, and modification of instruments, equipment, components, and systems. May oversee support staff. 5. Performs additional function incidental to research and development technicians.


Required Education and Experience

Required Education and Experience: Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Experience with gradient coil design in MRI or related fields. Experience with gradient coil construction and system integration including coiling systems and mechanical considerations.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

· Experience with gradient coil characterization and correction schemes. Excellent team player, ability to collaborate, and communicate effectively in a team setting.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proficient in integration of multiple design elements in completing a system application.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated track record of strong problem-solving abilities.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to keep on track and meet deadlines, provide feedback on process, yielding high productivity.
