What You Will Do

As the Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) of the Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology, the selected candidate will partner with the T-2 Group Leader, the Theoretical Division leadership team and senior staff to provide scientific leadership and technical management for the group. The DGL will report to the Group Leader and serve on the T Division management team. The Deputy Group Leader will assist and complement the Group Leader in maintaining a strong and healthy research environment within group, advocating for the group’s scientific excellence, ensuring effective program execution and sound fiscal management, stimulating program development activities, promoting personnel development, and other business administrative issues. The position is funded at 50% with the expectation that for the other 50%, the successful candidate will conduct funded research and development activities that are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group.

T-2 is the Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology group within the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos. The group carries out forefront research in Nuclear Theory, High Energy Physics Theory, Astrophysics, Nuclear Data, and Applications of Nuclear-Plasma physics. There are 23 technical staff members in T-2 and about 25 postdocs. In addition, the group typically hosts about 10 students each summer. T-2 has a research budget of slightly over $20M, 35% of which comes from the DOE Office of Science, 33% from laboratory LDRD funding, and about 20% from the weapons program.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and relevant experience in, one or more of the research, capabilities, or applications within the group as demonstrated by a strong record of publication and invited talks.

  • A record of successfully recruiting, mentoring, and retaining excellent and staff, students, or postdocs

  • Experience as a strong team-oriented leader who fosters an inclusive and welcoming work environment and encourages and empowers others

  • Effective communication skills, which will include, for example, an ability to engage in technical conversations with Ph.D.-level researchers, an ability to discuss program strategies with current and potential sponsors, an ability to delegate tasks to staff and administrators, and an ability to interact with all levels of Laboratory management.

Education/Experience : Five or more years of research experience after receiving a Ph.D. in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, physics, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing teams and projects across organizational boundaries.

  • Demonstrated success in developing and sustaining research programs that attract support from the Nuclear Weapons Program, DOE, LDRD, DoD, or private industry

  • Knowledge of Laboratory, DOE, and other national programs relevant to T-2 research.

  • Experience in interactions between national laboratories, universities, and industry.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
