Job Description

Reporting to the Quarry Supervisor, the Quarry Worker supports the operation of the university's Quarry by providing skilled stone cutting, quarrying, and blocking. Virginia Tech operates its own federally certified stone quarries. Hokie stone comes from the quarries located a couple of miles from the central campus.


Required Qualifications

Previous quarry or construction related experience.
Ability to produce stone components cut to precise specifications using mechanized and hand tool methods.
Ability to operate hydraulic stone blocking, sawing and polishing equipment.
Must be able to bend; stoop; and frequently, independently and safely move and handle items weighing in excess of 100 pounds or more, and the ability to reach, push and pull items.
Must be able to continuously be on feet standing and walking on rocky, uneven terrain.
Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, including hot and cold.
Will be required to operate a motor vehicle daily
This is a designated emergency personnel position. When the university is closed and as directed by supervisor, employees are expected to report to work.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the principles and practices of stone cutting, blocking, and quarrying.
Familiarity with rock formation and grain principles.
Experience as a skilled stonecutter.
