Position Summary
The UNC Department of Psychiatry and the Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health are seeking a Quality and Organizational Excellence Leader (Research Instructor) to steer cross-functional quality and process improvement initiatives.
Activities and Responsibilities:
1. Use project management skills to lead cross-functional quality and process improvement initiatives:
a. Encourage teams to maintain objectivity and psychological safety.
b. Gain commitment from all members of project team
c. Identify resources necessary to meet project needs (e.g., budget, personnel, and leadership)
d. Obtain and maintain executive support for projects through communication and leadership
e. Act as a consultant or mentor to other groups interested in implementing similar solutions
f. Navigate any conflicting interests among project stakeholders
2. Drive analytic and methodologic needs for improvement projects/initiatives:
a. Support leaders in development of problem charter and selection of best approach to solve a
particular problem.
b. Demonstrate mastery of basic statistical concepts, tools, and techniques
c. Have a working knowledge of advanced topics (e.g., linear regression, logistic regression,
DOE, etc.)
d. Teach/mentor others on basic analytic topics
e. Assist others with advanced analytic topics
f. Lead improvement initiatives using key methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, the Model for
Improvement)
g. Teach specialists and analysts key improvement methodologies
3. Use data to inform quality improvement initiatives:
a. Make decisions based on analyses and data
b. Develop interventions and initiatives based on data
c. Challenge leaders and their current processes when improvement is needed
d. Identify methods for solving problems which eliminate steps, speed processes, reduces
complexity, and improves the experiences of patients and clinicians.
4. Apply for and serve as Principal Investigator for grants to facilitate clinical research as it pertains to improvement science
5. Develop curriculum and educate members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including trainees, in the development of skills in continuous quality improvement
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., psychology, social work, public health, health informatics, or a related clinical discipline) is required.
The applicant should have one (1) year of experience in quality improvement team facilitation, project management, process improvement, or quality data analysis role. Clinical experience associated with leading quality improvement efforts may be assessed as equivalent to direct quality improvement experience, both in determining minimum requirements, as well as level of experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Competitive applicants will have proficiency in key improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, the Model for Improvement) and be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic statistical concepts, tools, and techniques. They will demonstrate excellent organizational skills, oral communication skills, and written communication skills. Experience working with an interdisciplinary team is preferred. Experience with data in Electronic Health Records and knowledge of health care and public mental health systems is highly valuable.

The applicant must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
