Job Description Summary:
Responsible for providing quality oversight of the Animal Care and Use Program to ensure the department is in compliance with SOPs, policies and regulations. Acquire, input and analyze husbandry and technical staff’s performance to general compliance with all SOPs, including work policies, husbandry, room records and overall quality of care data. Reports findings to leadership. Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology or related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for degree on a year for year basis.

Work Experience:

  • Three (3) years work experience in laboratory animal research facility

  • Experience reading and understand biomedical research terminology, including adherence to compliance of laboratory animal regulations.

  • Experience handling confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification: LATG Certification

Work Experience:

  • Proficient computer literacy, specifically in Microsoft Office 365

  • Work experience coordinating the execution of multiple projects with varying degrees of difficulty and frequently shifting priorities.

Skills:

Job Duties:

  • Provides quality assurance inspections of the animal facility ensuring compliance with all SOPs, regulations and policies to identify opportunities to improve compliance and training. When non-compliance is identified, this position will work collaboratively with the post approval monitoring program to develop a proposed corrective action plan, and support monitoring of the plan by the PAM where appropriate.  

  • Work collegially with members of the research community to ensure compliance.

  • Establishes new SOPs as needed by the Director of Operations or veterinarian(s)

  • Reviews and revises SOPs and policies on a regular basis

  • Provides written weekly or bi-weekly Quality Assurance Report to management

  • Compile data to produce monthly monitoring reports

  • Report findings at monthly IACUC meetings

  • Manage the departmental regulatory compliance records (USDA, AAALAC, DOD, and PHS), including environmental monitoring records

  • Maintains SDS

  • Ensure samples collected for quality assurance are collected at appropriate intervals, analyzed and if necessary, corrective actions implemented, documented and reported to appropriate regulatory body

  • Assists with animal husbandry facility management by going into animal rooms to ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Establish and maintain a communication with the Office of Regulatory Affairs for tracking and reporting animal welfare concerns

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Promote a positive work environment that is maintained through open and effective communication, and establish and foster strong relationships and efficient interactions with internal investigators, other KUMC departments and stakeholders.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
