The Department of Critical Care Medicine is seeking a Qualitative Researcher to support several studies. Candidates should demonstrate understanding and skill in using qualitative research methods, whether through formal education or other work experience. The responsibilities include participating and leading studies, and demonstrating skills including (but not limited to):

Developing data collection guides (e.g., interviews, focus groups) and piloting; managing qualitative data, including the de-identification process and transcription when needed; conducting direct observation in various off-site medical settings; conducting semi-structured interviews or focus groups using guides in a way that balances predetermined questions with the ability to pursue novel routes of questioning; participating in team-based codebook development and establishing appropriate inter-rate reliability; participating in qualitative coding and analysis across multiple types of data sources (e.g., transcripts, photographs); monitoring study progress and timelines; regularly communicating with members of the study team, collaborators, and research participants.



Job Summary

Coordinates high-level, protocol-related research procedures and study components and manages one study or assists with larger studies. Ensures the safety of the research and laboratory. Manages staff, audits studies, and recommends policy improvements.


Essential Functions 
  • Operationalizing interview guides in a way that balances predetermined questions with the ability to pursue novel routes of questioning.
  • Deciding whether proposed courses of action for research projects are feasible.
  • Analytically distinguishing segments of text for commonalities and differences (qualitative coding). Being able to then discuss with the team why the codes were or were not appropriate with accompanying rationale.

Physical Effort 

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary.
