Posting Summary
Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Qualitative Research Manager for the Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies. Reporting to the Director of the Cornwall Center, this position will be responsible for developing, overseeing, and conducting qualitative and mixed methods research projects. Specializing in research in high-quality instruction, critical or transformative education programs and practices, improving urban schools, or related areas of practice or policy, this position will meet the data and research needs of the Cornwall Center to advance the university’s anchor institution work. The data, and research needs for the anchor institution mission span place-based efforts, such as our work with Newark Public Schools and Newark’s most impacted communities to our statewide efforts working with education institutions and advocacy organizations to promote equity in opportunities, achievement, and post-secondary attainment.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
  • Design research, often in the context of continuous improvement cycles, develop data collection protocols, train and supervise research teams consisting of postdocs, external collaborators, and graduate research assistants, manage research-practice partnerships, provide guidance to community and government partners, conduct literature reviews, and author reports and other materials
  • Regularly coordinate with the quantitative team led by one of the Center’s associate director when conducting mixed methods studies
  • Lead work with other senior staff and postdocs at the Center, the Director will contribute to the Center’s staff development and communications agenda, which includes developing and conducting qualitative training modules, coordinating and making presentations at community and policy convenings, and developing written works for the Center’s newsletter
  • Produce writing and maintain an active presence in the education research and related fields, releasing multiple reports each fiscal year, preparing manuscripts for academic publication, and making presentations at research and practitioner conferences and other convenings
  • Make policy and practice recommendations based on research findings and communicating with policy stakeholders

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree
  • Three (3) years of applied experience and effectiveness

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires a person with excellent organizational talents, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to work with diverse interests in a spirit of cooperation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are essential
  • Both local and in-state travel may be required
Preferred Qualifications
  • A doctorate degree, preferably in education, sociology, public administration, social work, social policy, or public policy from an accredited graduate degree program.
  • Systematic training in qualitative research methods.
  • Master’s degrees in other fields will be considered where previous work experience is relevant to this position’s requirements.
  • Experience in schools, school districts, and/or communities serving traditionally underserved populations are essential.
  • Comfortable with discussions of mixed or quantitative methods.
  • Familiarity with desktop publishing software and data visualization tools.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement research and community-based participatory research.
  • Familiarity with community organizing.
  • Familiarity with Freedom Schools and other forms of transformative education
  • Familiarity with language commonly spoken in Newark other than English.
  • A good grasp of public policy issues related to human welfare in New Jersey’s cities and metropolitan areas.

Equipment Utilized
Proficiency in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and qualitative coding and analysis software such as Dedoose.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to travel to local schools and transport reports, booklets, literature
  • Ability to attend meetings across metropolitan Newark, some of which may be evenings or weekends
