Qualified NB Source Operator, Electrical Technician

A Qualified NB Source Operator is able to operate and maintain the Neutral Beam Power Systems and Ion Sources. Operate, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and maintain associated and supporting subsystems and test equipment. Additionally, provide coverage for experimental operations including required overtime, night shift, and weekend coverage as needed.

 

Under general supervision, performs a number of more complex and diversified technical tasks utilizing expertise and knowledge they have acquired. May perform some non-routine tasks requiring independent judgement typically involved with setting up of test apparatus, operation of equipment, and evaluation of the performance and reliability of systems and subcomponents. Follows various Laboratory procedures and applies PPPL prescribed standard technical practices and principles.

 

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.



  • Operate Neutral Beam Ion Source Power Supply local control center to monitor and adjust Neutral Beam Ion Source parameters. React to changing conditions and make adjustments as required or requested. The operator shall be responsible for operating the system within standard operating parameters with minimal supervision. (45%)
  • Repair and maintenance of Neutral Beam Power Supplies, Ion Sources, and associated equipment. Involves work on low level electronics equipment, High Voltage Power Systems, and electromechanical systems, electronics, and fiber optic telemetry. Troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of electronics equipment. Fabrication of electronic equipment including but not limited to: assembly of printed circuit boards, fabrication and assembly of chassis’, field wiring of chassis, racks, and equipment. (40%) 
  • Perform a variety of technical skills for other laboratory projects as required. (10%)
  • General housekeeping, logistics, and industrial construction activities. Maintenance of organization and cleanliness of work areas. (5%)


Education and Experience:

  • Candidates must have Electrical or Electronic Engineering technical institute graduate or AA degree with little relevant experience; or no degree with 2+ years of experience.
  • Relevant experience required includes testing, repair and assembly of electronic assemblies and/or industrial electrical/electromechanical system operation and maintenance.
  • Preference given to experience with high voltage systems; 480V and above.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient use of computer software for data logging and word processing.
  • Effective and clear communication skills.
  • Adequate hearing and speaking for good communications, alarm annunciation, announcements, operations, troubleshooting, telephonic and electronic notification and situational awareness in a construction or industrial environment.
  • Ability to use computers, read and interpret schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and/or electronic schematics, drawings, and sketches.
  • General mechanical knowledge and skill with hand tools for assembly and disassembly of chassis and components.
  • Full hand, arm and leg mechanical dexterity and coordination.

Physical Requirements:

  • Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception, occasional close work, work in low light conditions.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Continuous walking, standing or sitting.

Working Conditions:

 

Potentially hazardous conditions may be encountered during activities that must be completed safely. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Repetitive motion activities, work in very awkward positions, confined space and RWP areas. 
  • Bending, twisting, climbing, ladders, elevated work using harness, stairs, lifts.
  • Work on cryogenics, high voltage or radiation contaminated equipment.
  • Exposure to dust, temperature excursions, humidity, monitored low level radiation, noise, household and industrial chemicals, solvents and some fumes.
  • Working with/near/on hand tools, powered hand tools, machine shop tools and rotating equipment.
  • Working with or near moving vehicles, equipment, cranes, hoists, tractor, lifts and forklifts. 
  • Routine requirements to wear protective clothing for arc flash protection, mechanical grease and oil protection, radioactive contamination.
