Position Summary and Duties
The Public Safety Dispatcher III performs and supports the functions of communications operator, desk security, access system control, data entry, and monitoring the CCTV and all alarm systems. In a courteous tone with clear articulation answer telephone calls, dispatch and receive radio calls. Immediately dispatch officers to fire or burglar alarms, providing all pertinent information relevant to the alarms. Monitor the access control system and sign keys in and out to other employees, vendors and students as required. Monitor and maintain various logs. Accurately input complaint or police report information into the records management system.
Essential Functionsl:
Use a computer-aided dispatch system, receive emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical, or other emergency services. Determine the nature and location of the emergency; determine priorities, and dispatch campus police, local police, fire, ambulance, or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures.
Monitor direct emergency alarms, answer non-emergency calls for assistance. Enter, update and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems. Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration, student schedule records, and previous reports and provide pertinent data.
Monitor several complex radio frequencies including campus police, transportation, facilities, event services, and others. Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, and computer systems. Monitor local police radio for activity in the northern Baltimore area.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to handle multiple simultaneous responsibilities. Experience in data entry and retrieval. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the University for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.

Required Qualifications
Professional:
A. High school diploma or GED
B. Good driving skills; current and valid driver’s license, Class
C or higher;
C. Ability to obtain CPR, AED & First Aid certification within
first year of employment.
Personal:
A. Must pass physical exam and drug test.
B. Ability to write and articulate information accurately and
in a timely manner during stressful situations.
C. Demonstrated ability to be on time for scheduled work.
D. This is an essential position requiring an employee to
report for work during emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree.
Three to five years of experience dispatching at a higher education institution highly preferred.
