Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Fischell Department of Bioengineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering seeks a Public Relations Specialist (PRS). Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Communications, the PRS is responsible for supporting communications, marketing, and public relations operations within the Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BIOE) and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices (Fischell Institute) in the Clark School in an effort to strengthen and advance the identity and reputation of the two units among general, academic, industry, and government audiences. 
 
The Specialist is responsible for writing and editing brief news articles and news releases for internal and external audiences; proofreading articles, letters, and marketing collateral; researching, developing, and maintaining media lists by identifying and targeting mailing audiences; contributing to editorial calendar by researching key dates for which news stories/media releases should be planned proactively; maintaining digital archives of photographs, statistics, and reports as needed for communications materials; transcribing audio recordings of interviews; assisting with basic updates to department and affiliated websites; and providing event support.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferences:
  • Competence in such software packages as the Microsoft Office Suite and the Adobe Design Suite or comparable software or online design platforms (e.g. Canva, Easil). 
  • Previous experience with web content management, particularly in the Drupal open-source environment. 
  • Previous experience with MailChimp or similar platforms. 
  • Familiarity with social media channels such as Twitter, Instagram, and/or LinkedIn.

Physical Demands
  • Predominantly sedentary position/work. 
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to sit for an extended time and operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. 
  • Ability to review, prepare, and analyze data and figures; transcribe; view a computer terminal; extensive reading. 
  • Ability to move/transport up to 10 pounds of materials/office equipment. 
  • Ability to traverse campus to attend meetings and events and to deliver and pick up materials. 
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed to manage events. 
  • Some local and national travel is required approximately 10% of the time.
