What we want

The Public Relations Specialist, under general supervision, performs media relations activities, including but not limited to research, writing, and disseminating communications that increase the awareness and visibility of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) The Public Relations Specialist is responsible for assisting in public relations efforts including assisting with all aspects of media relations, writing and executing multi-layered, multi-sized events, that will enhance the strategic goals of Texas A&M Health. This position will join the Texas A&M Health marketing and communications team under the leadership of the Public Relations Manager to support all events and celebrations, media relations, and initiatives set forth by leadership. This position will consult and collaborate across the institution bringing expertise in event coordination and communications skills to the table. What you need to know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of related experience in event coordination, media relations or communications.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Superior proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Extensive knowledge of Associated Press Style Guide.

  • Skilled at project, time and client management.

  • Ability to work beyond normal officer hours and/or work on weekends.

  • Ability to self-direct, self-motivate and problem solve.

  • Ability to work in a dispersed team environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills in interacting with clients and vendors.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Communications related field, including Journalism, public relations or marketing communications.

  • Three to five years of experience in event planning, media relations or communications.

  • Experience working in a marketing communications office or agency.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Ability to Interface with graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and collaborating with writers.

    • Knowledge of  project management tool or app (we use Asana).

    • Ability to Source promotional items.

    Responsibilities

    • Event Coordination-Assist with executing external events from inception to conclusion for Texas A&M Health. Apply research, experience and best practices to create events that enhance the mission and strategic goals of Texas A&M Health. Coordinate different sized events and interface with multi-levels of faculty, staff and students. Negotiate contracts. Develop relationships with vendors and internal clients. Clearly communicate vision and scope of the events. Provide onsite logistical supervision. Conduct post event review. Gain approvals as needed from established channels.

    • Media Relations-Write, edit and disseminate communication that increases the awareness and visibility of Texas A&M Health. Maintain local, regional and nation media contacts and pitch news outlets on stores and event awareness. Collaborate with marketing and communication units at Texas A&M Health schools to brainstorm and recognize stories to elevate their faculty and research. Performs other duties as assigned.
