Summary of Job Duties:

The Public Information Technician is responsible for assisting the Office of Communications with providing and reporting information to the public concerning various activities and events. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this is a part-time position and the duties include:
- Conducts in-person and virtual interviews with individuals to gather information for press releases, news articles and stories as assigned.
- Research past publications and records to obtain pertinent information about subjects of articles and stories.
- Covers events to report activities through articles and stories.
- Writes and proofreads articles, feature stories, or press releases about campus activities, students, faculty, staff, alumni, business partners, donors and supporters.
- Disseminates news releases to newspaper, radio, and television media after review and approval.
- Gathers and reviews information collected from students, faculty, and staff for various publications and communication channels.
- Determines content for publication and advises groups on format, layout, and design to increase effectiveness.
- Proofreads the final written content for digital and print content.
- Support UAPB's website and social media content (with supervision and direction from the Director of Communications)
- Perform other related writing for promotions, and marketing of events and related duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Social Media Marketing or a related field.

-Experienced, skilled, and versatile business writer with excellent composition, creative, and digital skills.

-Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings/weekends, as appropriate

-Demonstrated ability and willingness to build relationships and work with diverse audiences, environments, and settings while maintaining cultural competency.

-Ability to work and communicate remotely (including but not limited to phone, email, text and video conferencing)

-Able to access high-speed internet from home and/or virtually.

-Able to meet and build academic, business and community relationships

-Able to assess programming needs for higher education, HBCUs, community, foundation, and corporate partnerships.

-Able to follow through with tasks with a positive sense of urgency and accuracy.
