Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the College of Arts & Sciences.
There are 50 faculty members, 44 SHRA and 37 EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 37 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.
Position Summary
This position will be solely responsible for executing comprehensive Chemistry department communication efforts for internal and external audiences. This position aims to continually keep the internal and external audience informed of UNC Chemistry news, accomplishments, and programmatic specifics in teaching and research. This role will include understanding the department’s mission, objectives, and goals to establish the most effective ways to communicate successfully and strategically. This role will be responsible for strategizing, planning, writing, editing, and producing content and images for implementation in the Chemistry external and internal avenues such as websites, intranet, department newsletter, alumni magazine, social media, public display monitors, solicitations, and department seminars. This position will also be responsible for creating flyers and brochures for department events. This position plays a critical role in managing and overseeing the communication essential for the department of Chemistry’s inward and outward-facing presence in the scientific community.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The ideal candidate must have:
* Expert writing and editing skills, including copyediting and the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms
* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
* Extensive knowledge of visual communication techniques
* High attention to detail
* Strong organizational skills
* A working knowledge of and proficiency with social media platforms and analytic tools.
* Ability to meet deadlines with competing priorities.
* Understanding or ability to learn basic Chemistry concepts to create content for communication platforms.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The preferred candidate will have:
* A combination of marketing, digital media, and communications experience.
* The demonstrated ability to convert creative ideas into visual statements that can distill broad themes and attract new audiences to Chemistry events, publications, and research.
* Familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS or willingness to learn
* Familiarity with basic HTML, CSS, and web development principles, including being able to troubleshoot, understand themes and work with legacy or specialized content or configurations or willingness to learn
* Experience with website development, with an emphasis on end-user experience;
* Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (i.e. InDesign & Photoshop)
