Position Focus:

Mental Health and Counseling (MHC) at Yale Health supports undergraduate, graduate, and professional students by providing individual and group psychotherapy as well as psychiatry services to a diverse, talented and passionate student body of over 13,000 individuals. MHC employs over 30 clinicians consisting of LCSWs, psychologists and psychiatrists and also provides high quality training to psychiatry residents, psychology post-docs and post-MSW fellows. As a Psychiatrist in the Department of Mental Health & Counseling at Yale Health Center, provide seamless, coordinated, compassionate patient-centered care to a culturally diverse student population. Adheres to the American Psychiatric Association Code of Ethical Conduct. Reports to the Director of Mental Health & Counseling.

Additional duties include: Assess, define and document patients’ clinical problems and provide appropriate diagnoses. Plan and execute therapy in a timely manner. Keep legible, cogent records of care. Treatment includes individual psychotherapy, group therapy and couples therapy as well as psychopharmacology. Provide consultation and teaching to residents. Provide crisis intervention and participate in weekday, after-hours on-call rotation, including weekends and holiday/recess periods.
Provide psychopharmacology evaluations and prescribe medication as appropriate. Responsible for overseeing psychopharmacology treatment of their designated patients. Liaison to University Community and direct work with residential colleges. May work with deans, masters and other Yale staff on student issues. Participate in training as needed. Work to build and provide care not only for their individual patients, but be readily available as clinical backup for other colleagues. Maintain patient charts and reports. Flexibility in adjusting appointment schedules to meet changing clinical demands and a willingness to consider the needs of the department and other physicians when scheduling time off. Cooperative and supportive of multi-disciplinary staff. Willingness to see walk-in and call-in patients when asked by support staff. Undertake teaching activities with psychiatry residents and post- doctoral fellows. Regularly attend and participate in department meetings and committee assignments. Meet regularly with Department Chief and Manager.


Essential Duties

1. Defines and documents patients’ clinical problems and reaches proper diagnoses; plans and executes therapy in a timely manner; keeps records of care; provides consultation and teaching to residents. 2. Performs evaluations, crisis intervention, individual, group, family therapy and/or medication management as needed to meet the needs of client population and the clinic. 3. Utilizes a range of clinical interventions appropriate to the population while maintaining high levels of client satisfaction. 4. Participates in hospital coverage, including: rounds; weekday and weekend on-call rotations. 5. Acts as liaison to University Community and works directly with residential colleges and may work with Deans, masters and other staff on student issues.


Required Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited medical school and accredited residency program. Demonstrated clinical skills.

Required Licenses or Certifications

Qualified for hospital and faculty appointments, CT Medical License, CT Controlled Substance Registration, Federal DEA Registration.
