Description of Work Unit
The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Our areas of expertise include animal health, imaging and diagnostics, infectious disease, cancer, and orthopedics. The department is highly interactive and offers research associates a friendly but rigorous learning environment. There is ample opportunity for informal interactions between research scientists and faculty, thus encouraging the kind of discussions and collaborations that are critical to success in the cutting-edge atmosphere of modern clinical research. Program faculty members are housed on South Campus, CSU. Most of the laboratory space is relatively close in proximity to the faculty. University facilities that support research efforts include immunotherapy and stem cell therapy, cancer, diagnostics and treatment, fundamental causes of heart disease and developing novel new treatments, reproductive biology of domestic animals, improved quality of life for animals and indirectly improve human health, orthopedic health in horses and humans and in-vivo orthopedic and soft tissue preclinical research.
Position Summary
A Research Scientist I position is available in the Department of Clinical Sciences in the Preclinical Surgical Research Laboratory (PSRL). This position includes interaction with the Principal Investigator as well as other research associates, graduate students, and undergraduate students. This individual will be part of a team of researchers completing funded projects.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a related area

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of post-doctoral fellowship experience
    • Animal models of musculoskeletal diseases
    • In-vitro and ex-vivo culture techniques
  • Proficient in histology, biochemical assays, and molecular biology assays
  • Previous experience with statistical analysis programs (e.g. GraphPad)
  • At least 2 first author or co-first author publications
  • Experience mentoring students

Duty/Responsibility
  • Conducting industry sponsored contract related projects involving rodent, rabbit, goat, and/or ovine animal models.
  • These projects will involve discussions with the sponsors, protocol and budget development, project organization and completion, and project write-up which includes all relevant data analysis and statistics.

Job Duty Category PSRL Laboratory/Basic Science Principal Investigator
Duty/Responsibility
  • Assisting with all PSRL animal studies which involve basic science applications and outcomes.
  • Serving as the primary principal investigator for the PSRL Laboratory Space which will involve regulatory approvals and maintenance (hazardous waste, biosafety, etc.), chemical and safety management, ordering, equipment maintenance, and supply stocking of laboratory areas.
  • Training graduate and undergraduate students in the general laboratory and on specific laboratory protocols. Oversight and managing of these students when they are in the lab and assisting with their research projects.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Contributing to federal, foundation, and internal grant applications as a co-investigator or co-principal investigator.
  • Conducting research investigators involving rodent models of musculoskeletal disease involving histological, biochemical, molecular, and biomechanical outcomes. 
  • Mentoring and managing graduate students, residents, and undergraduate students.
  • Collaborating with other PIs in the department and university. 
  • Submitting manuscripts of completed research. 
  • Attending scientific conferences (finances for at  least 1 per year will be provided by the PI) and presenting relevant research.
