Paid Community Engagement Opportunity for Spanish-Speaking Students
 
The University of Utah Center for Community Nutrition is looking for Spanish language translators.
 
“Journey to Health” is a 6-month community-based nutrition program that focuses on healthy eating and diabetes prevention for individuals facing health disparities in the Salt Lake Valley. For the first month of the program, clients attend 1-hour nutrition classes every week, the topics include:
Week #1 – Food demonstration (cooking class): talking about how to include more fruit in your diet. 
Week #2 – Food Access and MyPlate Education: Local/federal programs for nutrition assistance and how to build a healthy dinner plate
Week #3 – Mock Grocery Store Tour: how to read a nutrition facts label
Week #4 – Healthy Snacks & Beverages: replacing junk food with nutrient dense options
 
Medical Spanish is not required, as most of the information is taught at a basic level. The following is an example of the type of material we cover in class; “Choosing whole grains, like whole wheat bread, is important because whole grains contain fiber. Fiber helps us manage blood sugars because it slows down the absorption of glucose and gives us the feeling of fullness, making us less likely to over eat and raise blood sugar.”
 
Time commitment: *varies (read below)
-       We typically have between 2-3 classes per week. 
-       Classes are held on Mondays from 1-2 PM (Redwood Rec Center), Tuesdays from 6-7 PM (Sorenson Unity Center in Glendale), Wednesdays from 6-7 PM (Kearns Library), and Thursdays from 6-7 PM (Central Park Community Center in South SLC). 
-       if you’re interested in translating for only a couple of classes, this would be considered volunteering (not-paid)
-       *If you’re interested in providing Spanish translation at all/most of the classes (a total of 2-3 hours per week excluding travel time), we would consider this a PRN position and you would be compensated for it.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions 
 
Interprets communication between the staff and non-English speaking population. 
Translates written educational materials and documents in accordance with readability guidelines. 
Follows up with the non-English speaking population to inquire about the status of individual patients and answers questions. 
Assists the non-English speaking population in completing medical, financial and related forms. 
Escorts non-English speaking population to the appropriate service area. 
May provide patient education and discharge planning in conjunction with nursing and rehabilitation staff. 
Problem Solving 
 
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above. 
Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written text. 
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills. 
Ability to work independently in an efficient, productive manner maintaining composure and sensitivity in accordance with the environment of health care services.
Minimum Qualifications
Required 
Associate’s degree in a foreign language, or equivalency. 
Preferred 
Depending upon the department of hire, a knowledge of medical terminology may be required. 
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
