Job Summary
The Patient and Public Education Department at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is accepting applications for a part-time Health Educator/Patient Navigator. This position will coordinate the care of Spanish-speaking cancer patients and their loved ones at Huntsman Cancer Institute by acting as a liaison between patients and their health care team. Based on the needs of the department this position may also provide patient navigation services to other underrepresented patients. Successful candidate will receive patient navigation training prior to working with patients.

Responsibilities
  • Educates patients/families about treatment options including clinical trials and refers patients to appropriate agencies, organizations, and institutions.
  • Works closely with clinic and hospital staff to coordinate and verify the course of patient care, and follow-up. 
  • Assists patients in applying for financial assistance, if needed. 
  • Verifies translation of written educational materials. 
  • Receives incoming new patient phone calls in Spanish.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, trainings and other activities. 
  • Documents patient encounters in Epic in a timely manner. 
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and records, subject matter files and correspondence.  
  • Maintains inventory of Spanish language materials
  • Continues learning on the job by attending cancer conferences as well as reading current literature and completing continuing education classes, assignments and projects. 
Minimum Qualifications
There are two levels in the Health Educator position. 
 
 
Health Educator I: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field. Ability to demonstrate entry level competence in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Eduction or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.
 
 
Health Educator II: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field, and four or more years of health education experience. Must also possess and maintain certification as a CHES, MCHES, or CPH. Ability to demonstrate working-level professional knowledge in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.
 
 
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required. 
 
 
Training in a specific health area may be preferred.
 
 
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers, and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
Preferences
Bachelor’s degree in a health related field or equivalency and two years related work experience. Bilingual English/Spanish verbal and written skills with a high level of fluency in both languages is required. Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) preferred. 
 
Certified medical translator experience preferred. If not certified, successful candidate is expected to become a certified medical translator within 1 year of hire.
