Job Summary
Health navigators are trusted, knowledgeable frontline health personnel who typically come from the communities they serve. They bridge cultural and linguistic barriers, expand access to coverage and care, and improve health outcomes. 
Our research team led by Dr. Yelena Wu at Huntsman Cancer Institute is hiring Health Navigators to work in local communities as part of a COVID-19 testing in K-12 schools research study. Health Navigators will work with parents and schools primarily in underserved communities by educating parents and children on COVID-19 testing and/or vaccination, connecting them to services at local health centers or at-home testing as appropriate, and following up on testing results.

Responsibilities
Health Navigator responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:
·         Establishing trusting relationships with parents and families
·         Providing education about COVID-19
·         Helping individuals who are exposed to or infected with COVID-19 to access testing and vaccination resources
·         Identifying barriers to testing and vaccination using the Social Determinant of Health (SDOH) screening tool
·         Utilizing a structured protocol (MAPS) to work with parents and families to address barriers to testing and/or vaccination
·         Documenting activities and outcomes in appropriate databases (e.g., test results)
·         Attending team meetings to discuss progress, successes and challenges
·         Participating in ongoing training to maintain fidelity to MAPS protocol and other research required training
·         Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
There are two levels in the Health Educator position. 
 
 
Health Educator I: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field. Ability to demonstrate entry level competence in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Eduction or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.
 
 
Health Educator II: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field, and four or more years of health education experience. Must also possess and maintain certification as a CHES, MCHES, or CPH. Ability to demonstrate working-level professional knowledge in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.
 
 
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required. 
 
 
Training in a specific health area may be preferred.
 
 
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers, and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
Preferences
·         High school diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
·         Written and oral fluency in English required, fluency in Spanish preferred
·         Ability to work remotely and access to a reliable internet connection is strongly preferred (Note: a laptop and/or hotspot may be available for use if needed)
·         Basic computer skills
·         Familiarity with documenting activities and entering data
·         Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and families
·         Understanding of, and sensitivity to, targeted communities
·         Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required
·         Ability and willingness to provide emotional support, encouragement and motivation to patients
·         Ability to work independently and as part of a group
·         Willingness to take initiative and be pro-active in daily work
·         Experience working within community partnerships preferred 
·         Experience working as a Community Health Worker, or in a similar capacity, for at least one year is preferred
·         Completion of applicable CITI and IRB trainings required within 1 month of hire
