Description

The Department of Cinema and Media Studies at The University of Chicago is seeking applications for a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the field of Black Cinema and Media Studies expected to begin July 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate would be appointed for a term of two years at the rank of Instructor. The position is intended to provide substantial time for the selected candidate to advance their scholarship. It thus includes a teaching load of one course per year, with minimal advising and service responsibilities. The selected candidate would join the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program . Following a successful review in the second year, the candidate would be promoted to a first term as Assistant Professor.

Applications are invited across a range of specializations in Black media studies. These include (but are not limited to) research that focuses on history, theory, or aesthetics of African, African American or Black diasporic media. We also welcome applicants whose work investigates issues of gender and sexuality, transnational media practices, industries, audiences, and visual cultures of Africa or the African diaspora.


Qualifications

We seek applicants with a research agenda that has the potential to make distinctive contributions in cinema and media studies and who are excellent teachers or have the potential to become excellent teachers at the university level.

All requirements for receipt of a Ph.D in Cinema and Media Studies or a related field must be completed by the start of the appointment.
