Job Summary: The Protocol Analyst III provides some oversight and monitoring of the research compliance lab. Promotes prevention, detection and resolution of instances of conduct that does not conform to federal and state law, and federal, state program requirements, as well as the ethical and business policies of the University.


Additional Department Summary: The University of Alabama’s (UA) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is charged with ensuring all aspects of UA’s vertebrate animal research and instruction comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including standards of excellence necessary for maintaining accreditation status. The Protocol Analyst III – IACUC, which is core to UA’s research ethics and compliance activities, focuses primarily on animal subjects research.

The Protocol Analyst III – IACUC, under the direction of the Office for Research Ethics & Compliance Director and in coordination with the IACUC Committee, maintains the process of in-depth protocol review using advanced regulatory knowledge and experience. Primary responsibilities include maintaining the IACUC administrative processes and personnel performing protocol review; performing review of complex protocols; identifying and solving issues; and determining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, UA policies, and accreditation requirements.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of research integrity, compliance, policy, and/or regulations experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of research integrity, compliance, policy, and/or regulations experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Experience with IACUC requirements.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to analyze and apply regulations and ethical codes to IACUC scenarios. Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects in a research compliance office. Advanced knowledge and understanding of IACUC regulatory requirements in academic research. Ability to perform advanced reviews of research processes and protocols in a research compliance office. Advanced knowledge of higher education policies and research regulations. Advanced technical knowledge and experience with electronic research database applications, data management systems, and electronic workflow systems.


Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree. Demonstrated experience with IACUC regulatory administration in a research-intensive institution of higher education.
