Proteomics Postdoctoral Associate

Proteomics Postdoctoral Associate

Biotechnology Resource Center Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility

Cornell Institute of Biotechnology

Research and Innovation Division

The Proteomics Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Director of the BRC Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility in the development and implementation of various sample preparation techniques and LC-/MS/MS techniques for proteomics analysis, and subsequent MS data interpretation involved in an NIH funded project about mechanistic studies of Alzheimer’s disease. The Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility is a Biotechnology Resource Center Service Facility that provides fee-for-service access to advanced technologies in protein separations, identification and characterization as well as on other macromolecules and small molecules through Liquid Chromatographic Mass Spectrometry.  Customers of the facility include faculty, staff and students from Cornell University, Weill Cornell Medicine, and external non-profit and for-profit institutions. The position will be a key part of a high-energy, cutting-edge Proteomics Facility team and requires the ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research in a collaborative setting.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for development of sample preparation and LC-MS/MS analyses on human and mouse brain tissues and blood samples, operation and maintenance of two advanced HPLC and electrospray mass spectrometric instruments, as well as several proteomics-based database search engines. The incumbent will need significant knowledge of MS-associated bioinformatics tools, possess excellent MS data interpretation skills, and be able to routinely perform post-MS analysis data interpretation. The incumbent in this position will be required to perform sample preparation via either online or offline affinity enrichment techniques for large-scale quantitative proteomics and protein modifications.  The incumbent will be also required to conduct LC separated proteins prior to MS analysis and able to implement and develop multiple dimensional LC separation for protein samples from complex biological sources.

The incumbent will be required to write a variety of technical and/or project reports to the facility collaborators. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the preparation of publications and grant proposals.  Strong oral and written communication skills are required. In addition, the incumbent is required to keep a detailed laboratory notebook, contribute to general orderliness of the laboratory and support lab health and safety compliance.

This postdoctoral position is appointed in one-year terms, but is expected to be renewed for several years contingent upon continued funding and successful performance.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

* PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline

* At least two years LC-MS experience with demonstrated understanding of current proteomics technologies

* Must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation

* Excellent communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills are essential

* Proficient computer skills and experience such as Microsoft Office are required

* Basic statistics knowledge is required.

Preferred Skills

Previous experience on online enrichment of modified peptides/proteins and operation of Thermo’s UltiMate3000 LC system and Orbitrap mass spectrometer, and knowledge of Proteome Discoverer and Byonic tools are highly preferred.
