Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is one of five health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic programs at Chapel Hill. Position Summary
The Research Associate – Protein Biochemistry will generate new understanding of how drug-like small molecules bind to human proteins of relevance to health and disease. S/he will express and purify target proteins for use in assays to measure their interaction with small molecules.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Extensive experience with protein expression, purification, and characterization, including bacterial transformation, large-scale E.coli expression or recombinant proteins, affinity chromatography and other methods of protein purification.
Extensive experience assessing the quality and purity of recombinant protein samples (e.g. SDS-PAGE, native PAGE, mass spectrometry and analytical gel filtration)
Experience with in vitro biochemical methods, including direct ligand binding assays (e.g. SPR/BIACore, FP, FRET, ITC)
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
PhD in Biochemistry, chemistry, structural biology or related discipline
>3 years relevant post-graduate experience in protein biochemistry
Experience with baculovirus expression systems
Experience with protein crystallization
Familiarity with structural biology methods (X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM)
High level of state-of-art laboratory equipment knowledge
