Job Purpose:  Responsible for the proper receipt, storage, inventory control, and disposition of property and evidence items while in the custody and control of the police department. Ensure compliance with state and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding property and evidence.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Receive, itemize, and store property and evidentiary items; maintain accurate tracking record of all items.
  • Release property and evidence items to their owners with the proper approval.
  • Input and maintain detailed computerized records regarding the inventory and storage location of evidence and safekeeping of found property; verify accuracy of information, and update information.
  • Review officer/detective generated reports to ensure all items stated in a report have been turned over to property and evidence.
  • Identify and dispose of evidence and property to purge closed or unfounded cases in accordance with written authorization or department policy and procedures. Physically accompany, maintain security, and witness the destruction of unusual evidence and property.
  • Assist with inventories and audits, and ensure property and evidence is properly maintained and destroyed according to established guidelines.
  • Perform clerical duties by answering telephones, filing, typing forms, taking messages and monitoring visitors and police department. Fingerprint visitors and internal staff.
  • Prepare evidence records for permanent storage or disposal following approved guidelines and procedures.
  • Serve as the police department building manager.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Education:  High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Work Experience:  Two years of experience in law enforcement, records management or directly related field
  • Certifications: N/A
  • Skills:  Familiar with standard operating procedures governing the proper handling, packaging, and storage of physical evidence accepted as either found property for safekeeping. Knowledge of CALEA and International Association for property and Evidence (LAPE) standards that govern the ethical and professional handling of property and evidence. Must successfully pass a police Department pre-employment screening process to include background check, polygraph, and psychological exam.

Additional Information:  The property and evidence room of a police department charged with the proper storage and safekeeping of physical evidence that is critical for criminal prosecution. The person in this position must have specialize training and understand department and national standards pertaining to handling property and evidence properly and ethically. The person in this position could possibly have access to drugs, firearms, and currency.
