Position overview
Position title: Project Scientist for the ATLAS Experiment (Assistant Project Scientist)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project ___ (e.g., Scientist) Series Fiscal Year. 'Off-scale salaries', i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $71,500 - $86,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an assistant project scientist to join the UCSC ATLAS group. The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) is an organized research unit within the University of California system. SCIPPs scientific and technical staff are and have been involved in several cutting-edge research projects for more than 25 years. The primary focus is experimental and theoretical particle physics and particle astrophysics, including the development of technologies needed to advance that research.
Under the direction of Professor Michael Hance, the scientist will be responsible for leading existing ATLAS projects at SCIPP, in areas such as Phase-2 upgrade instrumentation and data analysis, as well as developing new projects that support the ATLAS operations and/or upgrade programs. The candidate is expected to interact with a broad group of collaborators, publish in scientific journals, present research results at relevant workshops and conferences, and assist with applications for grant and contract proposals.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Ph.D. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in engineering, physical science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of postdoctoral scholar/scientist research experience in one or more of the following areas: scientific computing for high-energy physics; large-scale data processing; software for detector instrumentation applications; and/or physics analysis
