A mission of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is to support faculty research and creative achievement. The Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team (CARAT) in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences provides high-level, pre- and post-award support and management of activities and processes related to grants and awards under the auspices of the Office of the Dean.

Position Overview:

The Project Manager is essential for RCA success within CAHSS. The Project Manager will provide critical support for the College’s efforts to enhance equity in research, training and dissemination activities related to retirement, disability and health. This position will serve as a key liaison between administrators, faculty and staff within UMBC and across the partner institutions (Brandeis University, University of Baltimore and Westat, Inc.) who are engaged in the cooperative agreement-funded Equity in Social Security Programs across the Lifespan: A Research Consortium on Retirement, Health and Disability. This position will assist the Co-Directors and Principal Investigator of the Initiative at each partner institution in coordinating and managing grant-related activities; providing active and continuous support for the achievement of grant outcomes; and contributing to the development of progress reports and conference presentations, as well as coordination of programs, workshops, travel and related materials.

Responsibilities:
  • Develops and maintains relationships with other offices within the
    University and with funding agencies to ensure effective and efficient operations of the projects. After grants are awarded, sets up project in CARAT, including record keeping via spreadsheet, filing system, etc. Studies award document to note any requirements.
  • Meets with UMBC PI to go over hiring, allowable expenses, purchasing, travel, etc. and develops a plan of action to execute the scope of work stated in the proposal to meet the deliverables. Monitors expenditures on grant, provides monthly financial reports to the PI and meets with PI at least bi-monthly (or upon request) to discuss the status of their award.
  • At PI's request, works with Sponsored Programs to process budget modifications, no cost extensions, etc. Reconciles expenditures on a monthly basis, and statements of payroll charges on a bi-weekly basis, investigating any discrepancies. Initiates retros and journal entries when necessary.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Contract and Grant Accounting to certify expenses and provide authorization for the final invoice. Gathers project information from UMBC and sub awardees to complete quarterly reports for the granting agency.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a Social Sciences field
  • Two years of experience in program administration, grant management or related experience in higher education, government or non-profit organizations, especially with Social Sciences programs
  • Knowledge of post-award grant business processes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with various software technologies, such as Microsoft Office suite, Adobe programs, and WordPress
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree, preferably in a Social Sciences field
  • Three or more years of experience in program administration, grant management or related experience in higher education, government or non-profit organizations, especially with Social Sciences programs
  • Experience in post-award grant business processes, including financial reporting to sponsors in a higher education, governmental or non-profit organization setting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in a higher education, governmental or non-profit organization setting
  • Ability to work with various software technologies including PeopleSoft Finance
