Job Summary
The Meaning and Modality Lab at the Harvard University Department of Linguistics is seeking a Research Assistant/Lab Manager for research in experimental semantics and pragmatics, using behavioral methods/linguistics surveys. The RA/Lab Manager will be responsible for managing and coordinating projects related to an NSF-funded grant on semantics and pragmatics in both spoken and sign languages as well as gesture, as well as other projects relating to experimental linguistics study of meaning.
Job-Specific Responsibilities
- Creative work with video editing software and experimental survey software, including:
- running the cameras and hardware
- significant counterbalancing and design
- Coordinating recruitment and payments for experimental participants
- Assisting with data analysis
- Training undergraduate assistants
- Maintaining and coordinating lab equipment and use of lab office space
- Organizing weekly lab research meetings and social events, and guest speaker visits
- Communications with IRB and interpreting coordinator
Basic Qualifications
- Basic level American Sign Language
- Basic web skills (maintaining websites, spreadsheets)
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- An intellectual interest in research in linguistics, cognitive science or psychology, as evidenced by previous coursework or any other means
- Fluency in American Sign Language
- Experience with video editing and surveys
- Event organizing
- Coursework in semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sign language linguistics, Deaf studies, statistics
- Comfortable with independent problem solving and well-organize
Working Conditions
Will need to be present at the Harvard Square location at least 3 days/week (publicly accessible by red line T stop).
