Position Summary
The High Throughput Sequencing Facility (HTSF) is seeking a project manager (PM) for external contracts and UNC internal projects running through the HTSF facility. This critical position will serve as the bridge between the lab bench and the customer. He/she will oversee and monitor all project laboratory activities including library preparation, quality control, pooling, DNA/RNA sequencing, data analysis, and reporting. The selected candidate will be responsible for coordinating and managing the execution of the project with resource (line) managers, managing the schedule and budgets, data processing, and managing reporting and deliverables for these projects. He/she will manage and coordinate all communications with the clients. This individual will coordinate and manage technical consultations with prospective clients, HTSF technical staff, customer service, and management. He/she will also lead and manage proposals and quotes for new projects or continuations of current contracts. This includes oversight and development of pricing quotes and budgets; technical approach; staffing plan; management plan; detailed project schedules and data/report delivery timelines; and past performance project descriptions. The PM will also lead revision of quality management SOPs, processes, and metrics, and help establish a robust quality system for HTSF. This may include addition of controls to sample processing and sequencing; establishing process checklists and interim procedural and data reviews; enhanced calibrations and instrument performance validations; and a formalized procedure and metrics for validating new methods and processes. 
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This position requires a 4 yr degree, preferably in Biological or biomedical sciences, and at least 2 years relevant experience. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant, advanced training. Candidates must have experience managing complex biomedical laboratory projects or experience managing projects in a clinical environment. The selected candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. He/she must be able to work in a high pressure and diverse environment. This individual must be flexible, collaborative, yet able to work effectively with a high degree of independence and as part of a high functioning team. Strong organizational skills are essential for this role. Must have knowledge of such software/programs as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Relevant post-baccalaureate or relevant bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and more than three years of relevant experience. A background in biology, cancer or genomics research is a plus. PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is highly desirable. Helpful if candidates have hands on experience working in a laboratory conducting DNA/RNA extraction or preparation; library preparation for sequencing; QC of raw materials, libraries, or pools; operating next generation sequencing instruments; producing and/or analyzing sequencing data; or other relevant lab experiences. Previous experience working in a university research environment is a plus.
