Position Highlights The Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering is currently seeking a dynamic and experienced Project Manager to join our team. The Project Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing the Arizona Commerce Authority Semiconductor Clean Room project. The project involves the design, construction, and installation of a digital twin of a semiconductor clean room. The physical clean room will be located in the Electrical & Computer Engineering building, while the digital twin will be a virtual recreation of the clean room (in virtual reality). The project should help provide information on how we can train and increase the semiconductor workforce in Arizona. The period of performance of the project is Jan 2024 - Dec 2025.

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Planning and Coordination:

  • Develop comprehensive project plans outlining objectives, timelines, resources, and budget requirements.
  • Manage project activities and resources by creating and monitoring the Master Project Schedule while monitoring budget, scope changes, and schedule risks.
  • Coordinate project activities and ensure alignment with college goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define project scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • Project deliverables: Semiconductor clean room, digital twin of the clean room, educational program for university students, community college students, and K-12 students in Arizona. The project sponsor (Arizona Commerce Authority) will evaluate progress and deliverables throughout the life of the project.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure achievement of project outcomes such as the planning and execution of the Department's domestic PhD student recruitment efforts.
  • Develop dashboards to monitor and track data from in support of MS in Software Engineering, MS in Industrial Engineering, MS in Systems Engineering, and MS in Engineering Management.
  • Lead weekly collaborator meetings, quarterly workshops, and prepare annual reports to project sponsors in accordance with contractual requirements.

Budget Management:

  • The Project Manager will manage the $1.5 million set aside for Digital Twin and VR Learning Center.
  • Estimate costs, prepare budgets, and monitor expenses throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify potential cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies to optimize project spending.
  • Ensure adherence to budgetary constraints and seek approval for any deviations.
  • Oversee budget and monitor budget variance for department-hosted academic conferences (e.g., Conference on Systems Engineering Research), events such as homecoming, and Fall and Spring graduation.
  • Manage day-to-day operational activities for equipment purchasing and installation for Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality hardware and software in support of the digital twin project.

Team Leadership and Management:

  •  Lead project teams, providing guidance, support, and direction to team members.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment and promote effective communication among team members.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities appropriately, ensuring that each team member understands their role and contribution to the project.
  • Lead the design and development of project knowledge resources for future ABET accreditation and Academic Program.
  • Reviews and projects in the College of Engineering.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including college administrators, faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Communicate project updates, milestones, and challenges to stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
  • Solicit feedback and input from stakeholders to ensure that project objectives are aligned with their expectations.
  • Coordinate meetings, track decisions, process, follow-up and document procedures for recruitment events and field trips for Integrated Business and Engineering degree in collaboration with Eller College of Management, and site visits of Evaluators, seminar speakers, and department's Industry Advisory Board.
  • Collaborate with internal (Electrical and Computer Engineering Department) and external stakeholders (Pima Community College and Central Arizona College) to achieve project outcomes, oversee subcontractors, and report project status on a monthly basis.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to organize rollout of educational outreach program for semiconductor clean room curriculum to K-12, community college, and university audiences.
  • Initiate and maintain project communications and documentation with the Arizona Commerce Authority and federal sponsors. 

Quality Assurance:

  • Monitor project progress and performance against established metrics and quality standards.
  • Conduct regular evaluations and reviews to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure project deliverables meet or exceed quality expectations and requirements.
  • Develop and monitor project workflows for the ABET accreditation logistics for the software engineering undergraduate program and Academic program Review for SIE department, and in collaboration with UA Global to organize summer research conference with microcampus partners.
  • Track metrics related to the percentage of projects completed on time and change orders.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in coordinating and leading projects independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence others.
  • Ability to supervise and lead entry-level staff.
  • Ability to analyze and address strategic issues.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of Project Management principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Complete knowledge of all job functions and industry best practices, techniques, and standards.
  • Ability to generate status reports that for industry and federal funding agencies.
  • Knowledge of University purchasing policies and procedures. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Project Management Professional certification or evidence of similar training.
