JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

An emerging center within the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State is seeking a Project Manager to join our highly motivated and dedicated leadership team. The center will be at the forefront of synthesizing diverse publicly available data by bringing diverse teams of scientists together to answer cutting-edge questions. Located on the University Park campus in State College, Pennsylvania, the center is focused on the intersection of Data Sciences and Molecular and Cellular Sciences.   

We are looking for a Project Manager to coordinate the diverse range of research efforts at the center. This position will report to the Center Associate Director with a dotted line to the Huck Institutes Managing Director. They will be responsible for ensuring the seamless execution of research projects at the center.

This position is funded through a 5-year grant, annually renewable, with the possibility of an additional 5-year renewal.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, with a combination of in-person and remote work every week.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Facilitate the creation of research projects involving graduate assistants, staff scientists, working group members, and the team science lead from study initiation to conclusion, including setting clear objectives, defining tasks, allocating resources, and establishing timelines with stakeholders.
  • Work with the Center Director and Associate Director to design project work-flow processes and project infrastructure; delegate, prioritize, and review research tasks to achieve project goals.
  • Manage and coordinate a team of researchers, technicians, and other staff, including assigning tasks, setting deadlines, and ensuring everyone is working effectively towards the project goals. This includes fostering a collaborative environment and being involved in hiring and training staff and participants using center resources.
  • Identify potential risks in projects and develop strategies to mitigate these risks with stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance and oversight of compliance with federal regulations and University policy on research.
  • Regularly communicate with various stakeholders including reporting progress to center leadership, liaising with external partners or sponsors, and communicating with team members.
  • Oversee project budgets, including preparing budget proposals, monitoring expenditures, and ensuring the project remains within budget.
  • Author, review, and revise procedures for research projects; direct the standardization of procedures in consultation with center staff.
  • Ensure standardization of data collection, data management, and reporting methods across projects.
  • Coordinate the efficient use of cyberinfrastructure resources, training, and community workshops to further research goals of the center.
  • Interface with external collaborators to direct and facilitate multi-site, virtual, and collaborative research.
  • In coordination with the Associate Director, develop long-term plans for resource allocation.
  • Assist center leadership with coordinating content preparation for promotional materials and reports.
  • Draft, edit, review, and/or distribute email communications, presentations, websites, etc.
  • Oversee Center events (workshops, seminars, annual Summit, etc.) in coordination with Event Planner.
  • Complete other duties as assigned in support of center projects

Education and Experience: The position typically requires a Bachelor's degree and 1+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Project Management Institute (PMI) Certification or similar is preferred.

We are looking for an individual who thrives in a dynamic environment and has a meticulous eye for detail and ability to manage multifaceted projects. The successful candidate must have excellent customer service skills, be able to handle and prioritize multiple tasks, act professionally in a fast-paced and complex work environment, have excellent organizational skills, have the knowledge of or willingness to educate themselves in University policy; have a great sense of ownership and pride in delivering robust and professional research project results from beginning-to-end.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Project), MailChimp, InfoReady or similar productivity software required. Experience in higher education and research is highly desired. Computational, data science, and research experience is a bonus but is not required.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$61,800.00 - $89,600.00
