Job Description:

The Project & Data Specialist adds to Brown University’s engagement infrastructure, playing a central role in implementing and tracking Brown University’s community engagement strategy and initiatives in Providence and Rhode Island. The Data & Project Specialist will support projects and processes, and establish and manage data collection and analytics to maximize informed decision-making within the Office of the Vice President for Community Engagement and broader university.

The Project & Data Specialist reports to the Director of Civic Engagement and collaborates with various stakeholders across the institution.  Working closely with colleagues within the VP’s organization, the Swearer Center for Public Service, the Division of Pre-College, the Annenberg Institute, and members of Brown University’s Community Engagement Council, this position provides support to initiatives and projects in service to building more robust, thriving, and resilient communities in Providence and throughout Rhode Island, particularly in the core cities.

Job Responsibilities:

Project Support and Process Stewardship

  • Collaborate with the Vice President for Community Engagement (VPCE) and Swearer Center staff members to plan, execute, and monitor various community engagement projects and processes. This includes assisting in project management tasks such as defining project scopes, developing timelines, and tracking progress.
  • Provide logistical support to the Community Engagement Council (CEC) committees, related working groups, and communities of practice.
  • Collaborate and contribute, as assigned, to community-university events, convenings, and initiatives.

Data Collection, Management, and Visualization

  • Design, implement and optimize data collection strategies to gather information related to community engagement activities, partnerships, and impact, including leveraging BrownEngage (esp. Salesforce) and data repositories across the University.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Maintain and update databases, spreadsheets, and other data repositories to store collected information.
  • Provide support to staff involved in data collection processes.
  • Utilize data analytics tools and software to analyze collected data and extract meaningful insights.
  • Create visually appealing and informative data visualizations, reports, and dashboards for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Interpret data findings and assist in making data-driven recommendations to enhance community engagement efforts.

Communication and Reporting                                                            

  • Collaborate with the Vice President for Community Engagement (VPCE) and Swearer Center staff to prepare reports and presentations summarizing community engagement progress and outcomes.
  • Communicate findings and insights effectively to diverse audiences, including faculty, staff, community partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with others to communicate the value of mutually beneficial community engagement, including reliably tracking engagement activities and efforts.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with best practices in data collection, analysis, and visualization to suggest process improvements and innovative solutions.
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge in project management and data management.
  • Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience to cultivate necessary skills, plus 1-2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience-based knowledge of Brown University and/or higher education with context grounding in community initiatives and engagement.
  • Demonstrated skills in data analysis and project management, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and platforms (e.g., Excel, Tableau, R, Python).
  • Strong data visualization skills, with the ability to present complex data in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently to complete assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment
