Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The UNC Institute for the Environment (IE) has a multifaceted mission: (1) To strengthen environmental research capacity across UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world’s critical environmental problems. (2) To work in partnership across UNC and with external partners to coordinate and deliver 21st century educational programs that provide students with the experience and skills to thrive in a growing global economy. (3) To put new environmental knowledge into action by engaging and serving communities, here in North Carolina and around the world. (4) To fuel and harness the university’s sustainability activities through the Sustainable Carolina Initiative |
Position Summary | This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, with at least three-in-person days each week and a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Center for Public Engagement with Science (CPES) in the UNC Institute for the Environment (UNC-IE) seeks a project coordinator to begin in May 2024. The CPES partners with UNC faculty/staff/students and non-academic partners to translate environmental science research results into action in North Carolina (NC) communities. This full-time position will support project coordination and youth climate education for an NSF-funded program, Youth Engaging in the Science of Resilience: Sensing the Environment & Envisioning Solutions (YES Resilience: SEE Solutions). In this project, CPES collaborates with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, the Juntos NC Program, and the University of Washington (in Seattle, WA) to engage diverse high school aged youth in resilience-focused informal science learning. This position will coordinate activity across program sites in NC and WA to facilitate collaboration and will support diverse youth in the local area in learning about climate hazards in their communities and taking action to increase resilience. The project coordinator will manage day-to-day aspects of the YES Resilience: SEE Solutions program across the three project locations, including: training of partner organization staff, providing guidance to project partners on facilitating youth action projects, planning an annual Partnership Summit, and overall program logistics. This person also will manage program activities for youth during the Teen Climate Ambassador Summer Institute at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC. While primary responsibilities are with the YES Resilience: SEE Solutions program, this position also will support other youth and teacher programming led by CPES. The position is housed within UNC-IE, which has a three-part mission: (1) to strengthen environmental research capacity across UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world’s critical environmental problems, (2) to work in partnership across UNC and with external partners to coordinate and deliver 21st century educational programs that provide students with the experience and skills to thrive in a growing global economy, and (3) to put new environmental knowledge into action by engaging and serving communities, here in North Carolina and around the world. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | * Four-year degree in environmental studies, public health, education, or related field of study * At least 3 years of professional experience that includes concurrent management of multiple projects * Demonstrated project management and organizational skills * Experience working with teens in informal learning settings * Experience as a member of a research team with demonstrated contributions to abstracts, presentations, and publications * Experience with Institutional Review Board applications and protection of minors policies * Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills * Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a 15-passenger van |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | * Master’s degree in health behavior, public health, science education, or related field of study * Experience working with diverse youth in informal learning settings * Experience educating youth on climate change and community resilience * Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills in Spanish |
