Position Summary

The Department of Neurology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a Project Coordinator, for the Community Health workers United to Reduce Colorectal cancer and CVD among people at Higher risk (CHURCH) trial is the initiative for which he/She/Xe is being recruited. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for managing Columbia University trained Community Health Workers (CHW) in an initiative to increase colon cancer and cardiovascular disease screening and implement a web-based culturally tailored nutrition intervention to reduce the intake of inflammatory foods among African American church members.  The Project Coordinator will oversee recruitment, weekly management, and supervision of a CHW outreach team conducting screenings in these faith-based settings. This initiative is part of an overarching NIH-funded Center to Improve Chronic disease Outcomes through Multi-level and Multi-generational approaches Unifying Novel Interventions and Training for health EquitY (COMMUNITY Center). The mission of the COMMUNITY Center is to reduce health disparities in chronic diseases in the New York City Region through rigorous testing, disseminating and sustaining of interventions that incorporate the multiple levels of influence from individual, interpersonal, community and societal approaches. The Project Coordinator will be expected to work collaboratively and synergistically with the other initiatives within the COMMUNITY Center.

The Project Coordinator will have a strong understanding of the socio-cultural factors that contribute to health disparities, with a specific focus on African-American faith-based communities. The Project Coordinator will develop and maintain relationships by conducting outreach to community faith leaders at community meetings in under-represented communities. He/She/Xe will recruit and supervise research volunteers, assist with participant recruitment, and prepare participant records. He/she will manage and coordinate aspects of research as well as assist with participant payment, data analysis, manuscript preparation, completion of interviews, and IRB submissions.


Responsibilities

  • Partners with faith-based communities, community-based organizations and the InTOuCH community health workers (CHW) to manage and implement the CHURCH trial.
  • Organizes and facilitates orientation sessions and meetings with church leadership
  • Manages day-to-day activities of the CHURCH trial, including participant recruitment, training sessions, program implementation, monitoring and tracking program deliverables
  • Coordinates with CHW champion to track and monitor progress of the study and performance of CHW screeners and study participants
  • Leads and facilitates trial-related workshops and trainings to the public in faith and community-based settings in New York City.
  • Oversees community outreach by conducting semi-structured interviews with individual community members to provide information pertaining to the CHURCH trial and related services

  • Conducts focus groups interviews with church leadership, CHW alumni and study participants

  • Participates in the Cultural Adaptation of recruitment and intervention materials and platforms

  • Manages participant payment, data entry and analysis, and manuscript preparation

  • Process revisions and annual continuation process for Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions
  • Responsible for creating and submitting annual study progress reports
  • Manages the day to day operations for PI including meeting logistics, correspondence and budget for the CHURCH trial

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience.
