New long-term temporary communications opportunity supporting the Center on Gender Equity and Health (GEH), which focuses on conducting innovative global public health research, medical and academic training, and evidence-based intervention development and evaluation of programs related to gender inequities, gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health (adolescent and unintended pregnancy, family planning, HIV/STI, healthy birth spacing). GEH currently has ongoing research in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States.

Under general direction, the Project Communications Specialist will provide editing and communications support for the Agency for All team. Will be responsible for ensuring clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work across multiple contributing authors. Additionally, the they will format and design reports, briefs, newsletters, social media posts, and manuscripts according to a program template and aligning with funding requirements. Will also support the dissemination of these materials through various platforms, including the project website and social media accounts. May also support webinars and other types of virtual and in-person events, via the development/design of invitations, agendas, slide presentations and meeting logistics.

The Project Communications Specialist will also support the communications team in work planning, tracking, reporting and other functions. Audiences for this project include internal and external audiences and as well as printed and online materials. Will be expected to make recommendations regarding content and layout, edits, and coordination of production, through collaboration with supervisor.


  • Anticipated duration: 4 - 5 months

  • Compensation: $33 - $37 / hour, including paid holidays and vacation/sick leave. Full-medical insurance also available.

  • Location: fully remote work arrangement available. Office location is at the main La Jolla campus.

  • Work schedule: Mon - Fri, 8 hours / day. Hours can be flexible, but must be able to coordinate/participate in calls outside of normal working hours in multiple time zones, as needed, due to international collaborations. Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule, outside of standard working hours including evenings, early mornings, and weekends when required.

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related area and/or equivalent experience / training in communications planning or strategy, digital or social media, knowledge management, or writing.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.

  • Ability to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.

  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, and active listening and political acumen skills.

  • Experience working in collaboration in teams located multiple time zones.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary research teams from diverse cultural contexts within tight time frames, fostering equitable partnerships and producing multiple dissemination products.?

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with a wide variety of people, using tact, diplomacy, confidentiality, and flexibility.??

  • Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and/or Francophone Africa Fluency in French (preferred).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $59,700 - $124,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.59 - $59.53

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
