JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
If you’re interested in being a part of an Information Technology Team that works hard finding solutions and providing the best user experience for our students, faculty, and staff, all while still having fun with co-workers, then consider working for Penn State’s Outreach and Online Education Information Technology (OOE IT). We investigate, evaluate, and collaborate to find the best technical tools and setup for our future and the next generation of online learners.
The Database Developer will be a creative, analytical, and innovative individual who is passionate about database development and solutioning. They will be working with other developers, database administrators, quality analysts, solution architects, business analysts, data analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure high quality data products are being developed to meet the needs of the organization.
The candidate should have a solid understanding of database development, design and management, and should be able to perform quality control, transform data via ETL processes, debug and analyze code, and work with team members to ensure a high quality product. They will work with other developers and a data quality specialist to maintain the existing data products that have been developed on-premise and work to build out a data lake within Azure to move data that has been planned for migration to the cloud.
This position will be familiar with Azure database development and be able to mentor other developers on migrating and building pipelines, test plans, and maintaining source control within the Azure platform. You would be expected to lead teams to identify, categorize, prioritize and analyze data and information to plan cloud migration and develop architecture artifacts.

SQL Development Skills

Develop stored procedures, functions, packages, triggers and views using T-SQL
Utilize SQL Management Studio to develop or modify database indexes, schema modification, and unit testing
Create, maintain, and execute SQL Server jobs
Create, maintain, and deploy SSIS packages
Understanding of Azure platform capabilities
Data Architecture Skills
Ability to understand data flows and create flow diagrams to represent data ecosystems from data source to delivery product
Ability to create Entity-Relationship diagrams (ERD)
Ability to document data mapping that show source to destination and logic used from data loading to column calculations
Quality Assurance Skills
Conduct root cause analysis for issue resolution and documentation through meaningful explanation of failures with examples
Brainstorming and implement new ways to verify and test data
Incorporate testing automation and monitoring through Azure DevOps test plans
Project Skills
Work with product owner or business analyst to fully understand business requirements and convert into appropriate technical solutions
Ability to break down work into manageable tasks and convey to the project team
Ability to provide hour estimates of individual tasks
Regularly provide tasks updates and progress percentages
Further Skills
Addressing current data documentation gaps
Assist in planning and implementing a Data Lake ecosystem

Education and Experience:
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of related experience. Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
