Job Description

The J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute’s (Edson E+I) Venture Development team serves to support all ASU students, faculty, staff, and community-based entrepreneurs to catalyze the entrepreneurial success of founders by connecting them with mentorship, training, co-collaborative spaces, and targeted resources. 

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Venture Development, the Program Manager, Venture Development serves as primary lead and directs activities and functions of venture development, including our signature program, Venture Devils.  The Program Manager supports the activities of the Venture Development team and ensures that the goals and objectives of the program are accomplished in accordance with priorities, time limitations, funding limitations, or other specifications. 

This position may be supported in whole or in part by grants or philanthropic funding and may be contingent on availability of funding.

Essential Duties

Strategic (10%)

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Venture Development, to strategically evolve the Venture Devils program, including the Venture Mentor program, to best support ventures in all stages of development, across all verticals and industries; leveraging the mentor's skill sets, backgrounds, and networks to better align with participating venture’s needs.
  • Lead the data/evaluation strategy to inform of progress, gaps, growth, and resource allocation.
  • Lead external communication strategies to increase the imprint of Venture Development involvement in external funding and visibility.
  • Actively engage across Edson E+I.
  • Liaise directly with stakeholders to communicate updates, progress, and impact of programmatic support. 

Managerial (30%)
  • Supervise the activities of direct reports.
  • Mentor and develop direct reports through weekly check-in and quarterly development conversations.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Venture Development, to hire, develop and retain valuable staff.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Venture Development to set the vision and direction of Edson E+I Venture Development.
  • Co-create an onboarding and training system.
  • Create and deploy a functioning system for task/project delegation. 

Programmatic (50%)
  • Create and manage new program tracks including arts/creative, social impact, and in support of strategic initiatives. 
  • Manage software platform to implement new strategies with mentor matching, content delivery, and program support.
  • Evolve recruitment strategies to foster diversity and inclusion.
  • Iterate the Venture Mentor program to scale and ensure appropriate human capital allocation.
  • Develop and articulate Edson E+I Training + Development Resource strategy and execution of content across program continuums.
  • Lead program continuum for designated areas/programs including managing Venture Mentor leads for program tracks.
  • Developing relationships within the entrepreneurial community (external), internal and external programs, deepening relationships with Venture Mentors in service of strengthening program offerings. 
  • Mapping out and implementing resources and training opportunities within each program to strengthen offering and impact. 
  • Establishing outcomes for program efficacy and tracking.
  • Lead programming development in our placed-based innovation spaces to elevate innovative districts with a focus on Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, and Scottsdale.
  • Deepen relationships with internal/external entrepreneurial communities and organizations to build out additional resources/opportunities for ventures and to establish Edson E+I/venture development representation (ASU academic/non-academic units, #YesPHX, ACA/Venture Ready, SBA, BBB, Pitch In).

Other (10%)
  • Supporting other ASU or community initiatives that align with the goals and mission of Edson E+I.
  • Knowledge of budgeting processes.
  • Represent Edson E+I and/or Venture Development and serve on various department, unit, and university committees as requested. 
  • Other duties as assigned by Associate Director, Venture Development.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND five years administrative/coordination experience; OR, Master's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND three years administrative/coordination experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Project management experience.
  • Experience in program construct and management with effective resource identification and allocation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the arts/creative community including funding mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the social impact environment, including applicable research.

Working Environment

  • Work duties are performed in diverse settings including ASU SkySong (Scottsdale, AZ), and various event/program locations.
  • Activities include use of office equipment including a laptop computer; subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Some travel to various campus, partner locations, and Edson E+I project sites may be required.
  • May require a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate events, projects, and initiatives.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Regular communication to perform essential duties.
  • Receive regular review of completed tasks.


Flexible Work Options:

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.
  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.
  • Full remote work is spending every workday at a site other than assigned ASU work location. This arrangement granted when the criteria in the flexible work arrangement policy are met. Executive vice president-level approval is required.
