Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Established in 1985 by Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise is a nonpartisan business policy think tank affiliated with the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The nonprofit institute and its affiliated centers convene leaders from the private sector, academic community and government to build a greater understanding of how entrepreneurship, economic development and global commerce can work for the public good. The institute leverages best-in-class research to develop market-based solutions to today’s most complex economic challenges. In doing so, the institute aims to support businesses and policies that better the lives of people in North Carolina, across the country and around the world.
Position Summary
This position will be responsible for independently designing and implementing a new program that provides assistance to manufacturing firms across the state of North Carolina by leveraging resources from the University system. This program will create strategies to raise capital and increase production in the manufacturing sector, which is a priority of the state of North Carolina and matches NCGrowth’s mission of creating good jobs for people in rural or disenfranchised communities. To have a successful program, this position will lead an inter-institutional advisory board that includes leadership of North Carolina State University’s Industrial Extension, the NC Department of Commerce and other relevant state agencies. This position will also independently lead research to identify national best practices that will help inform and shape this new program that will be shared with other University Centers across the state. A priority for this position will be to develop growth strategy programs for North Carolina’s tourism and service industries in these rural communities. This program will assist business owners in research and competitive analysis to help increase their brand awareness and expand their growth. The person will create and write original reports, slide presentations, and/or other media to effectively communicate their strategies to our rural NC tourism and service businesses.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with project management is required with experience in one or more of the following areas is required: marketing, consulting, finance/accounting, IT/data management, general management, operations, industrial engineering, strategic planning, applied economic development research, professional writing, disaster recovery, asset mapping, economic development, economic impact analyses, public policy, procurement, or local government.
Excellent writing skills and superior presentation skills in both large group settings and one on one. This Position requires the ability to communicate effectively with business, government, and university leaders such as CEOs, Mayors, County Managers, Tribal Administrators, and University Presidents
This position will serve eastern North Carolina; candidates should live a commutable distance to Greenville, NC. There will be regular travel 3 hours or more per week that may run into the evenings and some weekends required. Must have the ability to travel/commute to the areas the position serves.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Highly Preferred Experience
-At least three years of related experience.
-Graduate degree in business, planning, policy, industrial engineering, public administration, or related fields.
-Professional networks in the business, non-profit, local government, and/or university administration sectors in North Carolina or South Carolina.
-Working proficiency in Spanish.
