Job Description

The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law seeks an imaginative and driven leader who can plan and carry out events that catalyze Indigenous innovation at ASU and beyond. Under the direction of the faculty director, the Program Manager of Indigenous Innovation sets in motion the activities and functions of ASU’s new Indigenous Innovation initiative, ensuring that the goals and objectives of the Initiative are accomplished in accordance with the Initiative’s priorities, timelines, and available resources. This position is expected to last 18 months from start of assignment. It will be renewable contingent on the success of the initiative’s events during that period.

Essential Duties

The Program Manager of Indigenous Innovation will be responsible for and have duties in the following areas:

  • Planning and carrying out, in accordance with established University and College policies and available resources, Indigenous Innovation programs and events, including our bi-annual, multi-day interdisciplinary conference focused on promoting Indigenous Innovation to a national audience. 
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of work plans for programs in consultation with participating ASU faculty, the Office of American Indian Initiatives, interested Tribal Nations located within the State of Arizona, relevant industry leaders, and others.
  • Develop and manage the approved work plans establishing shared objectives for each event, an operating budget and fundraising goals, and detailed steps to carry out the event. 
  • Implementation of the work plan primarily by overseeing event production, including monitoring logistics, scheduling, and participant communications; supervising, leading, and training staff and assisting with staff hiring and contractor engagement; collaborating with other ASU and College of Law administrative offices; and ensuring a high degree of impact by evaluating each program’s effectiveness and audience experiences. 
  • Managing the financial aspects of Indigenous Innovation programming, establishing an annual budget and a control system to ensure effective oversight of expenditures and providing regular reports to the faculty director and administrative leadership. 
  • Engaging in marketing and communications strategy for each event, and, together with the Program Coordinator, ensures the cultivation of audiences, partners, and potential participants for events. 
  • Identifies, develops, and maintains working relationships with individuals and entities within and outside of ASU and serves as the primary source of information and guidance on matters related to Indigenous Innovation programming. 
  • Ensuring all aspects of Indigenous Innovation programming are implemented and controlled according to plan and represents the university in a liaison/public relations capacity on matters relating to Indigenous innovation programs. 
  • Physical presence at the workplace is an essential function or requirement of this job. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the College of Law and/or ASU. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND five years administrative/coordination experience; OR, Master's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND three years administrative/coordination experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience producing major events (2-3 years)
  • Experience working with Tribal Nations, Indigenous creators and innovators, or organizations that serve Indigenous communities, preferred.
  • Maintaining a current knowledge of Indigenous creators, innovators, media, and contemporary culture is central to the position.
  • Experience in budget preparation and forecasting and a basic knowledge of accounting principles are integral to a candidate’s success in this role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic project management and skill as a supervisor are also vital.
  • Experience in fundraising and cultivating sponsors is a highly recommended.
  • Experience in coordinating and prioritizing work and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationship are strongly desired.
  • Evidence of effective communication.
  • Experience planning and carrying out major events like conference, festivals, or industry trade shows.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. 
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. 
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
