Job Summary

The Institute for Rebooting Social Media (RSM) at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society seeks a program manager to join its staff team. The Institute for Rebooting Social Media (RSM) is a “pop-up” research initiative to accelerate progress on social media’s most urgent problems; by convening participants across industry, government, civil society, and academia, in focused, timebound collaboration, RSM aims to improve the state of digital social spaces through research, programming, events, and educational opportunities.

The program manager will be responsible for leading the Institute’s day-to-day functions, including the RSM Visiting Scholars program , a year-long interdisciplinary program for visiting faculty to pursue research, publish publicly-facing outputs, and host convenings on a variety of topics related to social media and networked communication in collaboration with each other and the BKC network. Working closely with Institute leadership, the program manager will help to foster and drive RSM’s thematic workstreams, identifying synergies across the existing community and external partners to drive outputs on a range of topics. The program manager will also be expected to organize and facilitate a slate of events and talks on Institute-related topics, including the RSM Speaker Series .

As a part of the broader Berkman Klein Center team, the program manager will be an active member of the community, seeking opportunities to collaborate with the Applied Social Media Lab team and the BKC network, as well as University faculty, staff, and students.


Position Description

As a Program Manager you will:  

  • Manage the RSM Visiting Scholars program, including the coordination of application, selection, onboarding, and offboarding processes; design and facilitation of regular cohort meetings, programming, and events; monitoring of program timelines and outputs; and contributing to program deliverables and grant reports.  
  • Lead the Institute’s thematic workstreams, coordinating internal and external stakeholders to organize convenings and drive outputs on a range of topics. 
  • Serve as the principal administrative contact and key source of program information for the Institute for Rebooting Social Media, liaising with program participants, internal & external partners, students, and staff.  
  • Organize and facilitate the RSM Speaker Series and other topical events, workshops, and convenings.  
  • Conduct research relevant to RSM and prepare briefing materials for workstreams, program sessions, meetings, and events; draft and edit written outputs including scholarly papers, event/social copy, program evaluations, grant proposals, and reports to funders.  
  • Supervise interns and student research assistants and direct staff as relates to specific RSM projects and programs.  
  • Work closely with Institute leadership on strategy and operational processes, including budgetary review and reporting.  
  • Support and contribute to additional Institute and Berkman Klein Center initiatives as needed. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5 or more years of experience in administration and management of programming and events
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:  

  • Domain knowledge and experience with Internet, technology policy, and/or social media related issues.  
  • Prior experience with program management and coordination, including command of project management tools, workflows, and best practices.  
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, including faculty. 
  • Experience facilitating events and programs, including designing and leading workshops or other educational sessions.  
  • Experience managing workflows and personnel, including direct reports.  
  • Organization, attention to detail, motivation to take initiative, and ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment  
  • Effective written communication skills, including for academic and general audiences; interpersonal skills, including experience leading groups  

Additional Information

This is a term appointment currently expected to extend through 6/30/25, with potential for renewal subject to funding and departmental need.

Based on the changing needs of the Center and the Institute, the program manager may be called upon for other tasks at short notice. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
