Founded in 2016, the GW Institute for Korean Studies (GWIKS) is a university-wide institute housed in the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University. The establishment of the GWIKS was made possible by a generous grant from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). The mission of GWIKS is to consolidate, strengthen, and grow the existing Korean studies program at GW, and more generally in the greater D.C. area and beyond. The Institute of Korean Studies enables and enhances productive research and education relationships within GW, and among the many experts throughout the region and the world.
To support our missions, we seek an outstanding individual to be the Program Manager, GW Institute for Korean Studies. The Program Manager will work collaboratively with the Director and the Associate Director of GWIKS to support our strategic vision to expand Korean Studies in Washington, D.C. and beyond.
The Program Manager will regularly interact with external constituents, visiting scholars and guest speakers from all over the world, current students, as well as faculty, staff, and the broader Korean Studies community. They may make recommendations to policy and procedures and have the authority to implement changes. They will have broad oversight and implementation duties across a number of areas, including public and academic programming, communications strategy, budget and sponsored projects, recruitment, and fundraising.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for GWIKS.
  • Manage communications including public announcements and letters, and social media presence across numerous platforms.
  • Manage events and programs; engage with audiences and speakers.
  • Monitor the Institute’s annual budget and expenditures.
  • Help to devise and implement long-term fundraising strategies and plans for the Institute.
  • Identify potential institutional and private donors and keep current donors apprised of the Institute’s activities and goals.
  • Works with the Directors and research administrators to develop grant proposals and administer successful programs.
  • Assists Directors in recruiting, hiring, and training new staff, including postdoctoral fellows. Supervise student employees.
  • Manages the post-arrival aspects of the Institute’s Visiting Scholars program, such as onboarding and correspondence on research-related issues.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
This is a hybrid position with some days in the office and some days remote.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Program coordination and administrative experience in higher education and/or a research institute is highly desired.
  • Interest and/or education in Korean Studies. Korean language proficiency is strongly preferred.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong presentation skills desired.
  • Event planning and programming experience including oversight of support staff.
  • Experience with budget monitoring and interest in learning more.
  • Experience with and/or interest in developing and managing sponsored projects (grants).
  • Ability to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, problem solve, and perform risk and needs assessments.
  • Skill in using common business software i.e. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Adobe Suite, Tableau.
Typical Hiring Range $57,553.66 - $79,165.63
