  • Develops, implements and maintains appropriate policies and procedures.
  • May serve as property custodian for the department.

    The Identity & Academic Motivation Lab (https://uh.edu/education/iamlab/), directed by Dr. Allison Master, is seeking a part-time, 20 hours per week, Program Manager 2. The Identity & Academic Motivation Lab seeks to understand how students' identity (how they view themselves and their social groups) affects their motivation in school, from preschool through college. Job tasks may include supervising lab processes, including developing, implementing, and retaining lab policies and procedures; managing fiscal activities, including procurement and budget analyses; preparing abstracts, reports, procedure manuals, and other written material and documentation; creating and reviewing reports of expenditures and activities; administering grant-related communications; serving as property custodian for lab and college research materials; recruiting and testing research participants in our lab at the University of Houston and at schools (both local and across the country) as well as communicating with families, teachers, principals, and administrators. We especially welcome applications from people with backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in academia. The position will involve supervising lab members, testing research participants at UH, traveling to schools and other sites to assist with research, and coordinating with school and district staff to ensure the smooth execution of research studies. The program manager will work with third party contractors to acquire materials and services necessary for running research studies. This position involves data entry, maintaining detailed and accurate records in computer databases, conducting preliminary data analyses, and assistance with Institutional Review Board applications. The manager will have opportunities to present findings to families, teachers, community members, and other researchers. The manager will assist with other data collection, data management, and clerical tasks and supervise other researchers or graduate students with their respective studies as needed.

    Desired skills and experience:

    • Strong statistics, mathematics, and logic skills.
    • Ability to manage research assistants and student interns.
    • Experience with data cleaning, including compiling large datasets involving student academic records and psychological survey responses.
    • Experiencing partnering with schools and organizations in the local Houston area.
    • Experience with statistical analyses, preferably SPSS and/or R.
    • Experience with computer programming or survey creation, such as creating Qualtrics surveys.
    • Experience writing Institutional Review Board applications.
    • Experience writing school district research applications.
    • Experience in research, with at least one year managing a STEM education research lab.
    • Experience working with children (e.g., teaching, childcare, volunteering with children, etc.).
    • Strong computer skills, including fluency with Microsoft Office and business internet practices.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent flexibility, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
    • Ability to multitask and meet weekly deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
    • Ability to transport oneself to research sites (owning a vehicle is not a requirement).
    • Weekend/evening availability may be required.

    Qualifications

     

    Bachelors and 1 year experience

    Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly job-related experience. Certification/Licensing: None.
