Job Description

Through Development fundraising, the Academic Advancement Director for the College of Engineering bridges the strategic goals of the College with the passions of our donors. In this role, proactively and in partnership with front-line fundraisers, you will generate and present compelling proposals, seeking financial support from our donors for the College of Engineering. You will also be the trusted philanthropic advisor to the Dean of the College of Engineering. You will work closely with the Dean to engage academic and administrative partners in the College, develop strategic plans and the related funding priorities, steward current donors, and effectively engage donors through the Advisory Council program. The single most important role of the Academic Advancement Director is to proactively drive proposals to donors. The individual will be expected to meet annual collaborative production goals as developed with the Senior Director.
The role reports to the Senior Director, Academic and Global Advancement within Development, and in pursuit of funding for the College of Engineering, will proactively serve four primary constituents:
  • The Dean, faculty, and staff of the College of Engineering
  • Development fundraisers
  • University donors
  • Leadership and other staff of the Department of Development. 

In collaboration with fundraisers, the Academic Advancement Director will:
  • Proactively build, develop, and manage a proposal pipeline;
  • Develop formal proposals to be presented to donors; and
  • Advance proposals from inception to conclusion.

In collaboration with the Dean, faculty, and staff of the College of Engineering, the Academic Advancement Director will proactively:
  • Identify growth priorities for the College; 
  • Develop and confirm funding needs; and
  • Assist in development of growth plans that will facilitate fundraising and donor engagement.

Key Activities and Goals:
  • With Development fundraisers, identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward fundraising prospects with capacity and inclination to make leadership level gifts. 
  • Develop messaging, packaging, and engagement content related to the College of Engineering priorities, especially for opportunities to collaborate with fundraisers to identify existing and potential future donors to College funding priorities and sponsors of College specific and interdisciplinary research opportunities.
  • Advance within the College of Engineering a culture of philanthropy and awareness of Development’s expectations, policies, processes, and procedures through formal and informal engagement of the Dean, faculty, and staff of the College.
  • Together with peer Academic Advancement Directors and the Campaign Administration team, identify, develop, confirm, and articulate messaging, packaging, and engagement around major initiatives that are understood and promotable by fundraisers.
  • Develop a vision for the College of Engineering that is consistent with the mission of Notre Dame in collaboration with the Dean, faculty, and staff of the College of Engineering, and other stakeholders that is understandable and promotable by fundraisers, resonating with non-academic external constituents of the University.
  • Administer the College of Engineering Advisory Council as a fundraising vehicle, and execute on a rolling basis an annual calendar of engagement activities relevant to promoting College of Engineering priorities to fundraisers and donors.
  • Develop and execute a plan to ensure effective stewardship and compliance of donors to the College of Engineering, and respond promptly and effectively to donor relations issues as and when they emerge.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 – 6 year of professional or academic work experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of a proactive approach to advancing projects from inception to conclusion
  • Record of success in translating complexity into clear ideas and effective communication
  • Experience and/or education in a technical or scientific field, with the ability to learn, understand, and translate complex ideas to multiple audiences
  • Evidence of effective effective collaboration across teams with diverse interests, experiences, backgrounds, and goals 
  • Evidence of ability to influence, persuade, and earn the trust of senior leadership to work with you toward a shared goal  
  • Ability to independently, effectively and efficiently manage multiple (and sometimes competing) priorities and projects, bringing each to timely resolution or fruition
  • Ability to think and plan strategically for both short and long term goals; ability to consider the impact of work on department, team,. donors, students, and the University as a whole
  • Experience, comfortable with, and able to work toward stated metrics and goals
  • Understanding of the role of philanthropy at universities 
  • Experience and record of success in writing and speaking clearly and persuasively
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite / Google collaboration suite, and able to quickly assimilate to proprietary and new technology
  • Ability to use existing and identify new technologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness

Preferred Qualifications
  • Sales, marketing, or brand experience in an engineering, technical, or scientific field would be helpful
  • Product development experience in an engineering, technical, or scientific field is a plus
