Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Program Development Specialist for EOF Special Programs. The Program Development Specialist reports to the Assistant Dean for Access Programs. This position works as an integral part of Undergraduate Education collaborating on engineering engagement, recruitment and other special undergraduate programs or events as assigned. The position is a high student contact position responsible for promoting and achieving student success by providing comprehensive academic support and retention services to students in a specific population, and by making timely referrals to appropriate offices.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Creates and sustains a supportive learning environment that inspires, encourages, and achieves maximum student success from outreach to completion of the baccalaureate degree.
• Achieves student success through intrusive academic and personal advising, academic coaching, academic guidance, financial literacy, and other responsibilities that provide essential student development and leadership.
• Develops, implements, and participates in academic outreach, retention, assessment, guidance, and related initiatives.
• Builds a diverse and inclusive engineering community through the Engineering Opportunity Program (EOP), expanding recruitment efforts in underserved school districts, and implementing precollege initiatives to strengthen the math and science skills for underrepresented minority and women student interested in STEM.
• Routinely works to implement best practice strategies to engage with underrepresented minority (URM) & women in engineering (WIE) middle/high school students and strengthen STEM skills.
• Shares duties in the planning and running of a five-week summer bridge program for incoming students of this population.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree
• A minimum of five (5) years related experience in program administration and coordination, as well as some experience working with students in a math/science or engineering curriculum.


The nature of the work requires a high level of sensitivity, discretion, and confidentiality.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Sensitive to the developmental needs of an adolescent population as well as the needs of underrepresented and first generation college students.
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, along with excellent interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
• Thorough understanding of the nature of engineering education and the unique challenges faced by students in the field is needed.
• Ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks in an environment of constant interruptions is a must.
• Excellent training and presentation skills.
• Experience assessing learning outcomes, student programming, issues of gender in engineering education and retention and outreach efforts.
• A dynamic and engaging personality, excellent communication skills, and experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a team environment are required. Some evening and weekend work is necessary.
• Patience, persistence, and a positive attitude are required.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and accurate records.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree
• Fluent in speaking Spanish
• The understanding of challenges that current and prospective students in Engineering or a related field may face in both academic and non-academic settings at a higher education institution.

Equipment Utilized

• All aspects of Microsoft Office, SSC, IMS, Degree Navigator and database management.

• Due to the nature of the workflow of this office, no vacation may be taken from the middle of June through the end of July.
