The Program Coordinator Sports and Aquatics/Safety Education serves as a central member of the team and is primarily located at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex - West Valley Campus. This position is responsible for developing student employees into student leaders through ongoing training, assessment, and development of student staff. Program Coordinator Sports and Aquatics/Safety Education works in a team setting to deliver world-class programs and services across ASU’s West Valley campus.

Essential Duties

The Program Coordinator Sports and Aquatics/Safety Education directs, develops, implements, and promotes sports activities, aquatics, and safety education programs for the ASU-West Valley Campus..

General:

  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and evaluate student leadership, intramural officials, lifeguards, swim instructors, and safety education instructors.
  • Implement assessment and evaluation processes of current and new programs and services.
  • Coordinate and assist with other university departments to host special event programs and functions.
  • Attend scheduled meetings, orientations, and staff development workshops.
  • Enforce program and facility policies correctly and consistently to ensure a high level of risk management is present in all programs and services.
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times so that all who interact with SDFW programming feel as though they belong.
  • Exhibit outstanding problem-solving skills by addressing unexpected issues with limited supervision.
  • Perform other duties as specified by the Assistant Director and leadership staff.
Intramural Sports Program:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the ASU West Valley intramural sports program.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate intramural sports officials and intramural leadership team.
  • Create sport league schedules, tournament brackets, and special one-day event tournaments.
  • Oversee the inventory, and maintenance of all equipment and apparel used for intramural sports.
Aquatics, Safety Education and Risk Management:
  • Manage the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation process for student leaders, lifeguards and swim instructor staff. 
  • Coordinate the oversight and planning of the aquatics, safety education and risk management budget.
  • Develop and implement aquatics programming including, swimming lessons, classes, special events and informal recreation.    
  • Implement Aquatic and Safety Education instructor training programs that emphasize instructor development, quality programs and customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee the facilitation of staff emergency preparedness drills.
  • Oversee accident reports and maintain semester log sheets. Analyze the data to help reduce injuries at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex.
  • Maintain staff certification records and communicate with program area supervisors about deficiencies.

Days and Schedule:  Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm; some weekend and evening required.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Six years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Higher Education, in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Sports Management, or related field and minimum one (1) year of professional experience.
  • Experience supervising, training, developing and evaluating student employees.
  • Experience cultivating an inclusive, safe and diverse environment for student participants and staff.
  • Evidence of sports programming experience or involvement
  • Experience with Risk Management practices
  • Evidence of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor and/or Water Safety Instructor certifications
  • Evidence of current Certification in Aquatic Facility Operations or Certified Pool Operator.
