UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. We have an outstanding opportunity for a Program Coordinator, Recycling.

Under the direction of the UW Recycling Manager, coordinate and perform work using knowledge and experience specific to sustainability, process improvement and recycling and solid waste. Serve as one of three primary customer contacts for the Recycling unit, and as department coordinator for strategy management systems and process improvement initiatives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

General job responsibilities include:

• Primary contact for the UW Recycling program.
• Independently answer inquiries from and provide information to campus community, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations and general public regarding the UW Recycling Program.
• Create work order requests and complex service and delivery schedules for recycling and waste pickup, cleanout, and special event requests.
• Independently prioritize the needs of clients.
• Act as a liaison with other University departments.
• Resolve problems that arise for clients served.

Under general direction:

• Develop, recommend and lead the promotion and implementation of campus-wide sustainability initiatives with a focus on waste diversion. Resolve inquiries and complaints regarding the recycling and waste collection programs. Work with staff regarding implementation of new waste programs and campaigns and the installation of recycling and waste collection containers. Research new techniques for collecting recyclables and diverting waste.
• Participate in building waste infrastructure site visits, drive university vehicle, create written communication for distribution to building occupants, and develop detailed installation plans. Conduct building-to-building education and outreach to promote the MiniMax program and overall campus waste diversion efforts.
• Assemble, label, and prepare recycling and waste containers for installation, and assist in distribution and placement of collection containers.
• Serve as coordinator for department initiatives and process improvement strategies including maintaining the daily huddle board and ensuring its ongoing development and relevance; coordinating recognition activities; measuring and reporting on ideas generated and implemented; and updating and reporting monthly operational performance metrics.

Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the program(s):

• Use word processing, graphics, statistical, spreadsheet and database software to prepare reports including activity, monthly client billing, inventory, diversion volumes, disposal reports, and other special reports as needed.
• Dispatch work requests to contracted vendors and internal UW service providers. Document all service requests, review invoices, and maintain inventories of equipment and service levels.
• Monitor and review vendors’ performance. Coordinate changes in schedules, routes, container sizes, number of containers, and commodity pickup.
• Set up new and maintain existing databases of all service locations, service levels, materials collected, and revenues collected within UW Recycling.
• Independently advise students, staff, program participants and/or the public regarding UW, City, County and State policies, procedures and activities related to recycling and solid waste. Recommend solutions to waste-related inquiries.
• Have extensive involvement with students, staff, the public or agencies in carrying out program activities such as campaigns and special events, waste operations and infrastructure improvements, student move out donation program, and waste infrastructure updates. Coordinate, schedule and monitor program activities and outreach to determine consistency with recycling program goals and the UW Sustainability Action Plan.
• Prepare, process, and complete customer invoicing and billing, including departmental recharges, billing activity, and customer reports.
• Participate in the development of department’s balanced scorecard strategic objectives and serve as measure owner.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

• High school graduation or equivalent
AND two years of experience working on waste diversion and/or sustainability OR equivalent education/experience

Additional Requirements include:

• Excellent oral and written communications skills
• Strategic thinker and problem solver with experience in process improvement strategy management systems
• Strong customer service skills
• Experience with word processing, spreadsheets and databases

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• Experience with multi-line phone systems
• Experience in recycling or related field (e.g. solid waste management, waste prevention, etc.)
• Experience working in governmental, higher education, or large corporation recycling programs
• Experience coordinating special event recycling programs
• Experience with public speaking
• Knowledgeable in researching special materials reuse and recycling options

Conditions of Employment:

• Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
• Regular and predictable attendance is required
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License
• Ability to lift / move up to 50 pounds
