Job Description

The Design Studio for Community Solutions (DSCS) is an initiative of Arizona State University’s Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. Collaborating with local stakeholders to devise practical solutions to complex issues, the DSCS serves as a vehicle for collaboration and innovation, valuing community voice to shape university and community engagements. 

The Program Coordinator will have responsibility for developing, implementing and adapting the community outreach and engagement for Design Studio initiatives, including the Maryvale One Square Mile Initiative which is a place-based community change initiative driven by Watts College and intended to put the substantial resources of the University in the hands of community members seeking better outcomes in their communities. This position requires a high level of community engagement and preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish.

This position reports directly to the DSCS Program Director and will be housed at the ASU Downtown Campus.

Essential Duties

  • Plans, develops, and implements community led projects for the Design Studio for Community Solutions and Maryvale One Square Mile Initiative 
  • Aligns work and monitors progress in relation to the theory of change and strategic planning documents of DSCS
  • Plans, coordinates and grows to scale the Maryvale Youth Provider Network and Youth Leadership Program in the community
  • Provides input on program effectiveness to develop improved methods, makes recommendations and/or takes appropriate action to improve programming
  • Interacts and maintains liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies in facilitating program objectives.
  • Develops and maintains strong, respectful connections to community stakeholders to ensure community ownership of the work. 
  • Creates communications to engage stakeholders, utilizing email newsletters, social media, and other tools. 
  • Develops and recommends new or revised program goals and objectives for the One Square Mile Initiative and Design Studio projects.
  • Provides oversight and coordination of logistics and program expenditure related to community projects. Utilizes ASU financial systems to pay and reconcile expenses. 
  • Develops and facilitates workshops, meetings, conferences, coordinates logistics, scheduling and participant communications. 
  • With Program Director, identifies and tests best-practices for community engagement, including support in measuring impact of projects and engagement.
  • Collaboration with Watts College Public Service Team, (Opportunities for Youth, Action Nexus, Public Service Academy, Pastor Center and Next Generation Service Corps) 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Six years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Bilingual and Biliterate in English and Spanish (please indicate in cover letter if you are bilingual/biliterate in English and Spanish) 
  • Experience organizing and managing complex programs and projects
  • Experience in community outreach, engagement and connecting with a wide range of community stakeholders. 
  • Experience working with youth and families in diverse communities 
  • Experience applying the principles, methods, and techniques of community engagement.
  • Experience in fostering cooperative work-teams by developing mutually-beneficial relationships
  • Ability to clearly articulate deliverables, objectives, results and outcomes and establish milestones and timetables
  • Evidence in possessing emotional intelligence and awareness of cultural, economic, and social dynamics
  • Ability to manage projects, organize others and prioritize tasks with competing deadlines

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in both an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse and outdoor environments subject to extended periods of exposure to external elements
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Travel in the Phoenix metro area will be required
  • Position requires some work on weekends and evenings for community engagement activities
