Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.
The Energy Institute is operated under the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) at Colorado State University. The Institute builds on the long history of work in energy at CSU and is intended to foster greater collaboration among energy faculty across all eight colleges with broad access to facilities for faculty and industry partners. The Institute conducts research, education, commercialization and outreach activities for the entire CSU campus. Also, the Institute operates two facilities; the Powerhouse Energy Campus, and METEC both of and provides safe, secure, and sophisticated facilities for university investigators and industry partners to collaboratively develop clean energy solutions. Position Summary
The CSU Energy Institute includes the Zimmerle Research Group, one of the leading research groups for emissions from oil and natural gas (O&G) operations, from production through distribution and end use. The group operates the Department of Energy’s primary test site for assessing leak detection methods – the Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (METEC), does field measurement of emissions from O&G, waste and other anthropogenic sources, and develops software for stochastic emissions simulation.
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the team as the Program Coordinator, who will work closely with the METEC Director and Research Scientists in developing and implementing programs of outreach and training for several federally funded projects as well as support METEC operations. The coordinator must be able to take initiative and work independently, foster relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders, plan and deliver outreach-related events, and execute community engagement and collaborative partnerships across the state. This position requires prioritization among multiple projects, adaptability, effectively meeting deadlines, and handling the unexpected with professionalism. The successful candidate should enjoy working with people, be able to “speak science and engineering” even if they may not be a scientist or engineer and share a commitment to the land-grant mission of connecting research, inquiry, and societal impact.
The primary office location is in Fort Collins, CO. While this position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, the individual is expected to maintain a balance by establishing a presence in the primary office to effectively carry out the duties of the position. The work schedule will vary but some evenings and weekends may be required to host effective outreach events. This position will include occasional travel primarily within Colorado. The position is supervised by the METEC Director.
A signing bonus of up to $2,500 may be considered for successful candidates.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited institution plus two or more years of experience with partnership development, community or stakeholder engagement, training, outreach, and/or facilitation OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a non-STEM discipline from an accredited institution and six total years of equivalent work experience in a STEM field
  • Three or more years of experience in project or program coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering technical science or engineering content for a variety of audiences including non-technical.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Track record of collaborative but independent decision making.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with technology; including Microsoft Office Products, virtual platforms such as Zoom/MS Teams, project management, workflow systems, Adobe Acrobat and web content management software such as WordPress.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the start date. The Energy Institute will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  • Experience planning and hosting workshops, trainings, stakeholder events.
  • Experience supporting proposal development for external funding.
  • Experience maintaining web pages and other communication materials with current content to keep stakeholders engaged.

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Work collaboratively with the METEC Director and Research Scientists in developing the outreach and training program scopes through strategic planning and development of goals, timelines, and reflection/evaluation to meet the research project sponsor’s requirements.
  • Utilize survey tools and informal meetings/discussions with project stakeholders to assess the related needs and gaps in education/training/outreach. 
  • Actively and independently collaborate with project stakeholders to develop programs and resources that are responsive to the research project needs.
  • Participate in conferences and partnership development activities including but not limited to speaking engagements, workshops, networking opportunities, tours, etc.
  • Support the research program through grant proposal writing, related project planning and implementation, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Assist in budget management, operations, and evaluation processes of training and outreach events.
  • Schedule meetings, organize and host events.
  • Ensure that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles are integrated into research project work plans, data collection, analysis and evaluations, reporting, and external project and program communications.
