Job Description

The Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian & East European Studies, and its instructional unit, the Critical Languages Institute (CLI), are seeking a Program Coordinator to assist with activities and functions of an intensive summer language program to ensure that program goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with established priorities, funding capacity and other specifications. Working under the supervision of the CLI Director, the Program Coordinator is instrumental in planning, coordination and execution of summer language programs and other Melikian Center projects throughout the year.

Essential Duties

  • Provides in-person, online and telephone support to current & future students, faculty affiliates, language instructors, visitors and external agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Serves as designated class scheduler for CLI summer courses.
  • Registers CLI students in their summer course, works with registrar’s office to address any issues.
  • Develops and conducts outreach and recruitment campaigns, to include advertising events, social media campaigns, website updates, classroom visits, and represents CLI and/or the Melikian Center in relevant events at ASU and beyond.
  • Oversees the CLI application process and manages application materials. Provides student application support & documentation tracking.
  • Maintains and updates student records and alumni updates.
  • Regularly communicates with students, faculty, study abroad vendors and superiors.
  • Assists with daily operations and logistics, and coordinates program activities with supervisor.
  • Assists Business Manager with Center’s financial operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Six years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience in planning and conducting outreach & recruitment initiatives with various student populations.
  • Experience in managing multiple priorities and projects with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Capacity to work without close supervision; exercising judgment, taking decisions, setting priorities, and interpreting policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with ASU policies and procedures.
  • Experience managing intensive language programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook), Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Zoom, and ASU enterprise software such as Drupal, Workday, and Salesforce.
  • Experience managing and handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Experience with writing press releases, promotional copy and advertising materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with relevant ASU policies and procedures
  • Overseas work experience, foreign languages, international travel & regional familiarity with relevant CLI locations.

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting. Work from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments. Communicate to perform essential functions. Use office equipment including a calculator, telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard and mouse), printer, fax and copy machine. This position receives regular review of objectives. Some outreach activities will require off-campus work, such as tabling at local high schools and community colleges.

Department Statement

Established as a consortium in 1984, The Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies advances innovative use-inspired research and teaching on the languages, societies and geopolitics of greater Eurasia.  The Center’s core mission is to enhance contextual expertise and cultural awareness in the communities it serves, through partnerships across disciplinary, ideological and geographical borders. In 2022, the Melikian Center was named as a National Resource Center for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies, with support extending through to 2026, including Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for students attending the Critical Languages Institute (CLI).  Established in 1991, the CLI offers intensive training every summer in less commonly taught East European and Eurasian languages. Students from diverse backgrounds and career paths take 8-13 ASU credits over 7-11 weeks, in courses taught by highly-qualified instructors, many of whom hold academic year positions at other institutions.  The CLI currently enrolls approximately 150 students each summer, of whom approximately half study overseas. In summer 2022 CLI languages were Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian and Uzbek.
