Being a part of Wellness@ASU as the Program Coordinator for Well-being Engagement through Aquatics and Safety Education means uniquely engaging in our mission of building an ASU student community that embraces physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being of self and others as a hallmark of the Sun Devil Experience. We do this through the Sun Devil Way: exemplifying; achievement, engagement, and responsibility.
As an integral part of Wellness@ASU, the experience team is leading the way in providing personalized frameworks for students to establish and maintain positive health habits at ASU and beyond. We do this by assessing student health and wellness needs, providing a variety of programs and building environments that promote healthy living, decision-making and student engagement for students to ultimately be better equipped to succeed in their academics, career and in their personal lives. This person will also be responsible for taking a leadership role in cultivating, creating and ensuring student participation in ASU Spirit, Pride and Tradition while instilling institutional affiliation and college pride.
The Program Coordinator for Aquatics and Safety Education serves as a central member of the experience team and is primarily located at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex - Tempe Campus.  This position is responsible for developing student employees into student leaders, through ongoing training, assessment and development of student staff.  The Program Coordinator for Aquatics and Safety Education works in a team setting to deliver world class programs and services across ASU’s four campuses in the Metro Phoenix area.

$42,017 per year


Essential Duties

General:

  • Hire, Train, mentor and evaluate student leadership, lifeguards, swim instructors, and safety education instructors.
  • Attend scheduled meetings, orientations and staff development workshops.
  • Enforce program and facility policies correctly and consistently to ensure a high level of risk management is present in all programs and services.
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times so that all who interact with SDFW programming feel as though they belong.
  • Exhibit outstanding problem-solving skills by addressing unexpected issues with limited supervision. 
  • Perform other duties as specified by the Assistant Director and leadership staff.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a strategic plan that aligns with the strategic plans within EOSS and the mission of ASU.
Aquatics, Safety Education and Risk Management:  
  • Manage the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation process for student leaders, lifeguards and swim instructor staff.  
  • Assist with the development and implementation of consistent onboarding and training programs for lifeguard staff across four locations.
  • Coordinate the oversight and planning of the aquatics, safety education and risk management budget.
  • Develop and implement aquatics programming including, swimming lessons, classes, special events and informal recreation.    
  • Implement assessment and evaluation processes of current and new programs and services.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for recruiting outside swim teams and rentals during low use times at the pool. 
  • Coordinate and assist with other university departments to host special event programs and functions at the pools. 
  • Develop a long-term strategic plan to develop summer programs and camps to be hosted at the SDFC’s.  
Safety Education:
  • Implement Aquatic and Safety Education instructor training programs that emphasize instructor development, quality programs and customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct hiring, training and evaluation of student employees for instructing Safety Education classes.
  • Assist with the development of long-term plan for future Safety Education programs.
  • Implement assessment tools and evaluation processes of current and new Safety Education programs and services.
Risk Management:
  • Oversee the facilitation of staff emergency preparedness drills.
  • Assist with monthly training programs that will be presented to SDFC Student Staff.   
  • Develop and implement full time staff training programs based on a pro-active risk management principles. 
  • Oversee accident reports and maintain semester log sheets. Analyze the data to help reduce injuries at the Sun Devil Fitness Complexes. 
  • Maintain staff certification records for four locations and communicate with program area supervisors about deficiencies.
Days and Schedule:  Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm; some weekend and evening required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Six years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Higher Education, in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Sports Management, or related field and minimum one (1) year of professional experience.
  • Experience supervising, training, developing and evaluating student employees.
  • Experience initiating collaborations with university and community partnerships.
  • Experience cultivating an inclusive, safe and diverse environment for student participants and staff.
  • Evidence of programming experience or involvement
  • Experience with Risk Management practices
  • Evidence of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor certifications 
  • Evidence of current Certification in Aquatic Facility Operations or Certified Pool Operator.
