Job Purpose
We are seeking a Program Assistant to manage our office and support programming administration and communication. This position develops and maintains strong professional relationships and works collaboratively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Performs administrative duties in support of staff, student leaders, and visitors. This position will supervise and mentor 6+ student staff. May greet visitors and provide first point of contact, creating an inclusive and welcoming experience. Gonzaga Outdoors is a growing co-curricular program that focuses on getting students in the outdoors in and around the Inland Northwest to create friendships, provide technical outdoor skills, develop leaders, and instill a sense of respect and awe for the outdoors.
The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position is $38,480 – $39,977 annually. The internal full salary range is $34,630 – $46,853.

  • Supervise, train, coach, and mentor a variety of student employee positions such as office assistants, marketing and communications coordinator, events coordinator, finance coordinator.
  • Supervise and oversee the Gonzaga Outdoors Bike Shop.
  • Provide oversight and ensure smooth functioning of both weekly office tasks and longer-term projects.
  • Coordinate student staff scheduling for typically 15-20 student positions.
  • Role model exceptional communication skills and a growth mindset.

  • Book vehicles, rooms, campsites, etc.
  • Assist with accounting, budgeting, and purchasing processes: support Director and student Finance Coordinator with expense allocation, reimbursements, refunds, and other departmental finance processes, generate expense reports, produce budget reports, supervise office supply purchasing, coordinate gear purchasing.
  • Develop and implement systems to support program operations related to trips, events, logistics, assessment, staff training, and office functions.
  • Manage program recruiting and hiring processes for student leaders (approx. 20 student employees, approx. 30 volunteer trip leaders).
  • Facilitate the weekly office meeting for all student employees and professional staff.
  • Manage electronic record storage.
  • Oversee the Outdoor Programs Website in conjunction with our student Marketing and Communications coordinator.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain WA state driver’s license

Desired Qualifications
  • B.S. or B.A. from an accredited school of higher education in student development, outdoor education/recreation, experiential education, business administration, or related field.
  • Knowledge of experiential education and outdoor leadership, with the integration of Jesuit perspectives.
  • General familiarity and comfort with outdoor recreation activities at a participant level (camping, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, etc).
  • Previous successful work experience that includes a minimum of one year of full time or part-time equivalent experience in an outdoor recreation, outdoor recreation office management or equivalent.
  • An understanding and ability to apply student development theories with a priority on student learning and growth.
  • An understanding of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion topics and an ability to help our program progress in our work in this area. Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
Physical / Environmental Qualifications
  • Remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.
  • Ability to prep for and attend meetings and events across campus in various weather conditions.
  • Wrist and hand movement related to computer work.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, stretch and reach.
  • Pick-up, carry and move items up to 25 lbs.
